I'm looking for my grandmother's first husband, John Henry Gillies who was born in Wigan 1881-3. He married Clara Green 1902-3 and we have no information of him after that point. Clara and John had a son, William Allan Gillies, born December 1903. We would like to know what happened to John and William. Thank you.
Regards,
Kathleen

Hi
There is a John Gillies, aged 27 in the 1911 census in an institution in St Pancras, London - you would need to spend 10 credits to view the transcript - it might be the one you are looking for...............

Looking on FreeBMD
Births - John Henry Gillies - Dec quarter 1882 Wigan
Marriages - Dec 1902 Registration district Ormskirk 8b 1329
to Clara Green
1911 census - index
There is a William Gillies aged 7 living West derby
But I can't see any Clara........so it may be worth looking to see if this is your William Allan
If you think they may be in Southport let me know & I can check the street directory when I'm next in the library

Using a neat little trick picked up from the Clwyd mailing list:
The address of that William Gillies is
295 KNOWSLEY RD BOOTLE
Other residents are:

GILLIES CATHERINE F 1894 17
GILLIES DAVID M 1885 26

GILLIES ISABELLA F 1900 11

Re: John Henry Gillies
Jane,
Thank you for alerting me of the responses.
Thank you to everyone for your research and replies. I have not been on in a few weeks, and no longer receive notification to my email address that I have replies. I'll investigate all these leads. Clara left England in October of 1911. I assume that the 1911 Census was out by then. She had given her nearest relative's address as 42 Clifford Rd, Birkdale, home of Margaret (William) Gregory. Clara left William Allan Gillies, her son, with one of her sisters to raise. We never knew what happened to John Henry, her husband.
Regards,
Kathleen
