Lancashire BMDThis site is for Lancashire births, marriages and deaths; however it is currently incomplete so worth checking the areas, but I have found it is good for early births/marriages in Liverpool! If, for instance, you find a marriage you can print off a form and it will tell you where to take or send the form; if it is 'real' Lancashire and it gives an address in Preston you can take the form in and collect your certificate while you wait! It's an excellent service

Yes I have found ths site very useful. As you say particularly for Liverpool, but also Ormskirk is coming along. It is especially helpful where the BMD indexes cannot distinguish which spouse goes where.
There is also a Cheshire equivalent - I know some North Meols families (eg Sumners) had connections there.
Also bear in mind that what you get is a copy of the Registrars entry, rather than of the copy register made for the GRO. Errors have been known to creep into the latter in transcription.
