Lee/Green familyHello,
I have links to the Southport area through my G. grandparents Gertrude and Gilbert Lee who ran a bootmakers at 18 Botanic Road, Churchtown, Southport, from1896-1907 approx (I think it is now a butchers shop). They were married in North Meols Church on 12th October 1896. My grandmother was born at 18 Botanic Road. Gertrude was originally from Ireland - I think she may have come over in 1880s. And this is where I have come to a standstill!
I also know that Gertrudes brother Anthony Green ran a bootmaking business from his home , 205 Sussex Road, Southport. (1901 Census). He was married to a local girl Mary.
Gertrudes sister Jane was married at All Saints, Southport on 24th August 1880 to Francis James O'Kearney. They later moved to Somerset. I think their father was John Green, but I have been unable to confirm this.
Family hearsay is that there was another brother Ralph, but I have been unable to confirm this. An elderly relative also tells me that they were profressional golfers, but the census says other wise.
I am interested to know if any of the Green family still live in the area. I was hoping that there may be a local paper I could write to to help with my search. Have you any ideas?

If not already, I would join the society and then you could put your information in our magazine The Sandgrounder' and it would get to 150+ people all over the world.
I'm sure someone else will be able to add something else. Your family sounds interesting...mine were labourers!

Of course there is a local paper - The Southport Visiter - but not sure if they would print your request.

I placed an add in the Champion on line paper [free] looking for my biological grandfather. I found his last wife and daughters. and have recieved all kinds of info from them. including pictures. I never knew what he looked like. so it is possible.
P.S. my mums mum was a LEE from southport and have traced the name to an Irish immigrant who married a Devon lady.

Hello,
As promised I have now become a member of NMFHS. Just printed out the family tree and it is on it's way to you.
Is anyone able to tell me if Southport had any connections to Torquay area of Devon with regard to trade/boot or shoe making. I find it strange that my Great grandfather should come up from there to set up a business. He later returned to Devon. Any thoughts?

I have moved this to under the letter L. I felt it more appropriate there.
Maybe he came to follow family or friends thinking he could make a go at business in a rapidly growing area but found he missed home

Probably a bit early for your G-grandfather, but in mid 19th century Liverpool was a huge magnet, attracting peope from all corners; maybe he started out there then saw the opportunity in up-market Southport? I wouldn't have thought there was a great shortage of shoemakers in the area, but maybe he already had experience of catering for the upper classes who were holidaying there. Do you know how old he was when he moved north and married (was he already "in the trade"?)
I've got a bit of an interest in shoemakers myself - my G-grandfather was one!

In the 1914-15 edition of Seeds Southport Directory Anthony Green is not listed under Boot and Shoe Makers. Also a Sidney Harper, boot maker, is shown as living at 205 Sussex Rd. Is it possible he too moved away? An approximate age could indicate he may have died or retired.

Thanks for the info, Anthony would have been 47 by 1914. I must admit I haven't searched deaths for as recently as 1910s. I will have a look. Thanks again.

Gilbert was 24 when he married Gertrude. He was already "in the trade " being shown on the 1891 census as a bootmaker in Torquay. I too have many shoemakers on both sides of my tree.

Doh...Honestly, I read these posts as they were written and I read 'bookmaker'...so it was an eye opener (pardon the pun) to realise this morning that I've been imagining quite the wrong thing...
