Lilley family Marshside/ChurchtownHi, I am trying to trace details of my maternal gt grandfather who was called Charles Augustus Lilley (I am a bit suspicious of the middle name). On my grand parents marriage certificate (1914) his occupation was shown as 'gardener'. At the time of marriage my granfathers address was 117 Bispham Road. I believe that my gt grandmother was called Annie Doris.
To date I have not been able to find him on any search of census or BDM records. To add to my problem I do not have my grandfathers date of birth (other than he died in 1934 aged 44 - the result of a works accident at Crossens sewage pumping station).
Any advice would be most welcome.
Many thanks.

As you know your Grand fathers age when he died then you could start by looking in the GRO birth indexes for his birth. Then send for the certificate. This will give both his parents names - including his mother's maiden name. You should be able to find their marriage and they should be on a census.
There are a few Charles Lilley's on the 1901 census in the Lancashire area - he may not have used his middle name on the census. And of course Lilley could have been transcribed wrongly.
You could also try local directories for that address - they do have a surname index too which helps. That might help trace the family on a census too. And then there are electoral registers too - later ones would include the women in the household over the age of 21.
Not knowing where you live I have no idea how easy it is for you to get to Southport reference library of course. I'm afraid I am only able to offer to do some research for society members

Jane, thanks for your help. I can easilly get into Southport to visit the library. And I will try the address index.
Many thanks again for your help.
I'm pretty new to this - as you can probably tell!

Glad to help if I can. And I can now see it says you live in Leyland.
Most of the reference library staff are very helpful and know what they are talking about. If you happen to be in there on a Tuesday morning that is my usual day (along with Seacop) and we often help new people.

Hi - I see that you have given the names of your gr grandparents, but not your grandfather's name, which would help to narrow down a search of the 1901 census. Also, I see that your grandfather died from an industrial accident, so when you go to Southport library have a look at the Southport Visiter for that year for details of the accident - they are on microfilm. There will have been an inquest so look for details of that as well.

Bez and Jane, Thanks for your replies. I did not realise that you could still access Southport Visiters form way back. I will certainly have a look at them.
Thanks again.

Seed's Southport Directory for 1914-15 shows a John Leslie living at 117 Bispham Rd. The directory only shows the head of the household and your grandfather could have been a lodger. This coupled with Jane's comment that there are several Lilley's in the Lancashire area may indicate that your grandfather's family was not from Southport. Maybe time to check those "foriegn" Lilley's.

Forgot to mention in my earlier post that there was a HW Lilly (note spelling) living at 26 Lancaster Rd.

Thanks bobg, that's great!
Also the spelling issue has opend things up. I have now found my Grandfather on the 1901 census living with his mother and younger brother as lodgers, just around the corner from Bispham Road. No sign of Gt Grandfather at this time - possibly away somewhere? It says against my Gt Grandmothers name (Married) so I presume he was living eleswhere.
Thanks again to everyone I feel I have made a lot of progress in a short time.
Regards
Allan

Allan,
It just shows how little bits of information can begin to help to get past that brick wall. Glad to have been of some help.
It is a small world, many years ago I lived just around the corner from Bispham Rd, on Wennington Rd. I had a childhood pal living at 115 Bispham Rd next door to the address you gave for your grandfather.
Good luck with the rest of your seach.
Bob
