Locating a grave?Hello again
Dad has just managed to unearth a couple of reciepts from Duke St Cemetary, with the Grave Numbers and Section on them.
Other than making plans for a very long expedition of the Cemetary, wondered if there is a way of tracing at least a rough idea of were we will find them. They are from 1912 and 1929, same plot, Mother and daughter, so we are wondering if any of the others could be there too?

If you plan to go before Monday you will have to try by yourself (there is a plan of the cemetery as you go in - on the right hand side; if you can wait then the best idea would be to ring Southport Crematorium and ask if they have the plans at the office and can they tell/show you? Last time I went looking around Duke Street (about three/four weeks ago) a chap from the Cemetery office was checking all the graves/monuments so he had the plans and helped us to find what we were looking for.

Do you have the map of the cemetery that shows all the sections with their letters? If not, I think I have a scanned copy somewhere in my files.

Andre if you find it can you put a copy under Local Cemeteries please?
We have a copy of Birkdale cemetery section map on there so a good place to look before setting out on a grave search. At least you know which section to go to first

Am I glad I checked in here first
Was going today, but something came up - so planning to go tomorrow, that plan just may well save me an awful lot of walking
Off to have a look.
Thank you

Lynda the plan on here is for BIRKDALE Cemetery - this is the cemetery on Liverpool Road NOT the one on Duke Street. That is Southport cemetery

When I went looking for a grave at Duke St. a very helpful man from the office there helped me when I was looking lost. He had a map of the graves and no.s and even took me to the area.
Shame the Society cannot get a hold of a copy of these.

That will be why it didnt make sense then thanks Jane.
Yvonne, I need that man might not be today though, weather not so good for grave spotting just now

Found it
The nice man was there, shame about the hail stones! but well worth the trip.
I found out, the two relatives I have the receipts for are actually buried in the same plot as my nan and Granddad, and none of the family knew this. So, email off to the powers that be now to find out if any others are there too.

Well done Searching for a grave can sometimes be so difficult. And very brave in this weather
lease keep us informed of the outcome of the email because I think they may want a lot of money to tell you more...............so it will be interesting to hear what you get told for free
I bet the find has also got you with more questions to answer too

I have asked several times if the NMFHS and/or The Rimmer FHS can have copies of these but keep getting an evasive response! But at least we do know who has a copy
My concern is that the Crematorium are going to start charging an 'Administration Charge' for any look-ups - and whilst we all accept these are public records I have to agree that it may not be possible to have them easily available to the public
Lynda: I would try ringing the Crematorium first before you ask for a 'written' response (which might involve a charge?

When I phoned they only gave me information about the grave number for the person I asked. Any more information they said would be charged and needed to be in writing.
I don't think I would mind a small charge but £6 seemed a lot. And Southport isn't the only place to charge from what I've read in the family history magazines so maybe it will become the norm rather than the exception.
I am waiting on some news regarding cemetery records though and will up date as soon as I hear more

Well too late, I emailed.
They have sent me a response this morning, agreeing to check my detailed request for yep £6.
So, that will be going off today - I just cant wait to find out who else is there

Well they are a fast service, and very informative. I now have the details of all five (yep, FIVE) family members along with date of death, occupation and address, and who bought the plot.
So, today's revelation is that my Great Great Granddad bought the plot in 1912 and is the fifth member in there we knew nothing about, died in 1932.
Along with the Auntie of my Dad, who again we knew nothing about who died in 1929 and lived in Windermere.
My family are now finding it very sad they are not mentioned on the headstone we purchased in 1988 for Nan and Granddad, and toying with the idea of a replacement to include them all.
Thanks go to this site, for the information on how to find all this out.

And now you have burial dates you can go into Southport reference library and see if there are funeral reports in the local paper of the time. Very very informative if there are

Lynda

Of course looking forward to that one.

Only found one report - but has been a very interesting find. Now given me a lot more to go on, and more elusive relatives to track down.
Good bit of history, as it seems g granddad was a member of two bowling clubs, the George and the Scarisbrick. Members from there and Southport Corporation attended funeral.

IdeasYou could also try looking to see if the flying clubs still exist. If they do they could have information about your g'grandfather which would be good to know.
Good hunting...
