MarshallsMy line of Marshalls starts at the moment with Joseph Marshall (1831) of North Meols. It would be interesting to see if we match up?

My GGG grandmother was Ellen Marshall, who I think may have been the daughter of James Marshall and Jane Rymer... though no Ellen Marshalls seem to exactly match her age in census returns/grave inscription.
However, assuming this to be the line, James was son of John Marshall and Ann Soar, and John the son of William Marshall and Elizabeth Robertson.
What I am interested in is that James' baptism in 1746 lists his father as John Marshall (transported). I assume this means he was found guilty of some petty crime between James' concenption and baptism and was transported to the colonies (I would guess Virginia possibly at this point in history).
I would love to know more about this transportation and the crime he committed.

further to the transportation issue.... it wasn't John Marshall who was transported, it was his wife, Anne. The extracts don't mention the mother's name in James' baptism, but it seems the original entry states that he was son of John Marshall and Anne, his wife transported.
Further to this, at Lancaster Assizes, Anne was found guilty of stealing 22 shillings and sentenced to 7 years' transportation to the American colonies. This was deferred until she had given birth to the child she was carrying (though women often quickly got pregnant to avoid execution or transportation in the hope that they could appeal or bribe their way out of the sentence in the intervening months).
Clearly Anne (née Soar) was transported before James' baptism. I haven't yet managed to find anything on her transportation or what became of her in America.
James' father, John Marshall, was first married to Ellen Bibby, whose father was Miller at Ainsdale and first Miller at Birkdale Mill in 1750 (Ellen was born in Ainsdale Mill a few years before the move).

I've discovered that Anne's transportation is amongst records compiled in a set of books by Peter Wilson Coldman. These are available at Liverpool Central Library so I'll post back when I've got there to check them out. At best, the records will confirm the crime & sentence and also the date of departure, ship and her destination.

Did you get to check them out HodgePodge? I'm also keen to know more details about Anne's transportation.

In "Families and Cottages of Old Birkdale and Ainsdale" edited by Syliva Harrop, it indicates that it was James Marshall (son of John of Weathercock Farm) who married Ellen Bibby, daughter of Joseph Bibby, miller of Ainsdale; he lived to be 92 and had fourteen children by Ellen and his second wife, Jane Rymer.
This small book also outlines the case of Anne but says that nothing is known of her after she was transported to America.
I have been contacted by a guy wo lives in Shaws Road who is descended from John and Anne - but he didn't want me to write down in a family tree any details of Anne's crime because he didn't want the rest of his family to know about it!

My current hunt is for information on Carr's House, which was occupied by Henry Marshall in 1845. I've done a bit on Henry (son of Robert Marshall & Dorothy Rymer, married Jane/Jenny Livesey.
In 1841, Henry was living in "Hills Side" with his father & siblings, the eldest child in the house, but his older brother, Thomas, was next door. I'm not sure if this is Carr's House (which isn't listed by name in the censuses)... but if it was, then one might expect Thomas to have taken it over, rather than Henry. Also, Robert was still alive in 1861, which means it's unlikely Henry got his farm from his father.... however, I do wonder how Henry managed to be a farmer in his own right only 4 years after leaving his father's home & marrying when he hadn't inherited it (perhaps he was running it for his father).
Anyway, Henry was running the farm attached to Carr's House in 1845. In 1851, he's just listed as living in Birkdale, a farmer of 16 acres with his wife & children Ellen, Robert & Thomas. By 1861, he had moved to Aughton's House, close to the Ash Tree, farming 23 acres. He later moved to Windy Harbour Rd.
I'm not specifically seeking information on Henry & family, though I would like to know them as much as possible, but I'm particularly interested in anything else relating to Carr's House.
I know it had disappeared by 1893, and Dunkirk Rd was built on the land.... this house appears to have sat on my parents' land.

I can't help but it might be better if you asked for help on Carr House under - if you need help? More people may look than something under Marshall

yes, I wasn't really sure where best to put it, so plonked it in a place where anyone who knew henry well might also know something about the house he lived in (though I am also interested in Henry... I can't seem to find his father, Robert's, baptism)
I appreciate that this isn't, technically, a North Meols appeal... but it's impossible to completely separate North Meols and Birkdale, given their close relationship before the merge.

I think you will find there are people would argue we cover Birkdale too. I know some of our members have ancestors in that area so hopefully someone will be able to help.
