Mayo family

Hi all,

Well it has been raining pretty well none stop in Wales for weeks and weeks..
so I decided it was time to revisit family history research. Since I last did anything I have found all sorts of new online resources  AND I found your amazing website and have spent a happy afternoon having a look and not worrying about the terrible state that my garden is in, or the rain- so thank you! I have also just downloaded my membership form.

Sorry next bit is long- I just can’t seem to get the hang of this forum / text language keep it short type thing,

Amongst other names, I am interested in Mayo family.  As far as I can tell, my gang arrive in Southport from Tarleton.
James Mayo is married to Ellin (Ellen) both born around 1780- they have a number of children baptised in Tarleton from 1805 including, in 1810, a set of twins - James and ‘Robart‘
He (James senior) then seems to move to Southport..I think it is my James Mayo listed re a boarding house in 1825 Baines Directory.
In 1841 census, he and Ellin and Jane their daughter are in Upper King Street.
From Parish Records for Tarleton, there is a Jane Mayo baptised in Tarleton in 1830’s aged around 12 - parents James and Ellin-, Jane is  listed as born in Southport- she is baptised the same day as a child of Thomas Mayo - my line (1808 son of James and Ellin)  baptises one of his own children.… guess something prevented James and Ellin baptising Jane earlier!

So finally to the North Meols stuff- I think the Robert below was possibly the same Tarleton one as robart above and he moved with James etc to Southport.
Have found the following marriage record which could be him?
Marriage: 27 Oct 1830 St Cuthbert, North Meols, Lancashire, England
Robert Mayo & Ellen Johnson
,
both of this parish, by licence
wit: James Salsbury, Willm Rushton

Can’t seem to make any links re census but I could be tired!
Is anyone else looking for the Mayo gang?

As an after note… I did send for a number of James Mayo death certificates a few years ago (no mention of him in1851 - so assumed he dies before then and after 1841) - but nothing I could be sure about returned - probably wrong ones!
Re their (James and Ellin) marriage- at the time, I got a  bit stuck re missing Tarleton records, so I never got any further and have no info re either of them originate from Tarleton anyway! (… brick wall).

Re Tarleton Mayo family- a number of them are in the same grave (s) in the churchyard- stones still standing with names from Thomas onwards- no idea if he (James- father of Thomas) went back to Tarleton to be buried or might be in St Cuthberts or elsewhere in Southport?

Ellin his wife- no idea- when I last checked, I couldn’t find a certificate of any sort to send for, for her, I often worry about her!!  I don’t know who she was, or where she is!
Is there a map of the Tarleton graveyard etc to look for older graves, or is Mayo a more common North Meols name than I might think?
Anyone also searching for this family, or has anyone got any advice? Help please re trying to be sure of my assumptions of generally to get more info![/b]

Sorry for such a first post ramble..I promise I did try to keep it short!
Thanks, would be grateful for any help. AJ.

Greetings

Hello and welcome to our website and forum.

It's been windy but sunny here in North Meols but I've still been on the trail all afternoon.  Sadly, I have no Mayos in my line but I am stuck on a Howard so who knows...you may be able to help one of us.

I'm sure someone will be on shortly to give you more info.

Good hunting...

There was a baptism at St Cuthbert's on 11th March 1832 of James, son of Robert & Ellen Mayo, Southport, soldier.

There are no burials for that surname.

Thanks for your friendly replies!

looks like I might be back to sending for death certificates - need to have a look which Ormskirk ones I already discounted!

Names re the St Cuthberts entry seem to fit with family names so will have a look at this one- thankyou so much for the info.
Can I get any more info re him from him being a soldier?

Re forum- if Robert marries Ellen Johnson and they have kids, is it worth asking for her under the 'J' list or do you think people look everywhere anyway (I know I did!) sorry- don't want to create work for you having to move stuff.

More rain.. might remind myself where I got to with another surname now!

Thanks again.
Jane

Sadly you get more information about soldiers who died in the war than those who survived.

Hi all - update- this Robert mystery seems solved- also thanks to NMFHS Christ Church Burials publication I have finally found the grave for Robert's parents James and Ellen.

But I have a new question- below - probably should be asked in a differnt section, but I couldn't work out which one!

I looked at the Ministers section for St Cuthberts on the  Lans OPC site and noticed a Robert Mayo listed as 'Officiating Minister' for marriages and (I think) burials in / from 1816.

I wondered if anyone could point me to further resources re understanding the role of an officiating minister, ( in 1816 why did they have them, when were they used, how did you become one etc) Have tried internet search for this info without much luck.

Also are there any specific sources of info re St Cuthberts officiating ministers?

I'm sure that there must be some connection between this Mayo minister and the Mayo family that I can trace to North Meols at about the same time - I would love to know more - although a familiar name in other places in Lancashire, it isn't a common name in Southport area.
This info might give me a route to more research on my local Mayo family!

Thanks

aj

The term "officiating minister" merely means the minister who took the service - who "officiated" at that particular service.

At that time the Rector of St Cuthbert's was the Rev Gilbert Ford, but he never resided in the Parish and relied on his resident Curate, the Rev John Mawdsley, to officiate in his stead.  However, Mawdsley died in 1814 so no doubt the Rev. Mayo was drafted in to fill the gap.  He was probably one of a number of ministers who might have come to take services - it is unlikely that he was a Curate as the registers usually make that distinction, but he certainly could have been.  Unfortunately, the official list of Rectors does not include their Curates.  The link below will take you to a page with a list of Rectors and their dates.

I have just thought on to look in the back of the LPRS volume 3 of the Parish Registers at the list of Clergy.

I can confirm that he was definitely not a curate.

For officiating ministers it gives the date when that persons name first appears in the Registers and the transcript is as follows:

Baptisms:
12th May 1816, Robert Mayor

Marriages:
14th May 1816, Robt. Mayow

He did not officiate at any funerals.

I checked the entries, but the names don't seem to be connected and it could have been that he was just visiting the area (possibly for the sea bathing) and was asked to take these services.  Some of the visiting ministers have where they came from listed, he does not.

Thanks very much for the research and info, interesting stuff.

I got excited when I thought that I might have found another Mayo family member (I was speculating that he could be brother of my James born 1780!) and if so, then this Robert might be a way to more info.
