Moving to WesthoughtonI am trying to discover why some familys moved from the North Meols area to Westhoughton around the 1860's, my great great grandfather, Robert Dawson also moved at about this time and I think one of the reasons could be looking for work.
I wondered why move to Westhoughton as it is not a large town, was there a recruiting drive in North Meols? ie, newspaper articles, etc?
Would appreciate any help.

Westhoughton was both a mining centre and had a textile / weaving industry. I guess if you were a North Meols silk weaver in the mid 19th century you took whatever was going. I have a couple of (distant) families moved to Westhoughton around that time. The older members & women carried on as weavers, the younger men went straight down t'pit.

The same reason really that my gr grandparents spent a number of years on Dalton-in-Furness where he was a labourer in an iron ore mine. They went where the work was.

I wonder...Hello
I may be way off beam here but I have friends who came from Westhoughton. A lot of their ancestors worked on the railway and maybe that is why people from North Meols travelled there too, to work on the building the railway. There were huge buildings for making and repairing the locomotives and more houses were needed. I could be wrong...I usually am, but that's my 4d worth.

I've got him - married to a 6th cousin of mine Ada Sutton. What I hadn't realised is that Henry himself is also related through his mother Mary Meadow(s). So he is a 2nd cousin!
He didn't last long in Westhoughton, by 1901 he was back in Southport
his wife having died some years earlier

Why not post Sutton under the letter S - more people will spot it there and you never know someone may be related

Again thanks for any help. | I'm trawling through the Gale 19th century newspapers database to see if any adverts. Unfortunately the Southport papers are not online, but Preston is, and might wel carry the same stuff. Nothing so far....
