Murray in North Meols

Hi, I'm new to this forum, looking for answers to a FH problem I'm having.
My grandfather's family lived in North Meols in the 1880's. I have been looking for his birth certificate on & off for about 2 yrs now.

We all knew him as Thomas Murray, and according to entries in the 1891 & 1901 censuses, he was born in Southport and may have been called John T Murray). This is where my problems start. First, would the Registration District have been Ormskirk in 1882? I have been told Ormskirk, West Derby, North Meols and Southport itself.
In any case, my second problem is that I cannot find my Thomas Murray in any district. I know there can be name changes and transcription errors, but at least if I get the Registration District right, I know I'm starting in the right place.

Hello littlej. welcome to our forum.

Ormskirk was the registration district for people born in Southport at that time.

I have looked in the GRO indexes for 1882 & 1881 and I can't see any Thomas or John T registered in Ormskirk.

If you are trying to find his birth certificate in order to get another generation back have you thought about going sideways and getting one of his siblings certificates?

Have you found his parent's marriage?

Good luck and if you need any further help just come on here and ask. We all try and help

Hi Jane,
Thanks for answering my question. I'm really looking for the cert to answer another question about his father's name. My research tells me his father was Walter or Daniel (or both) but on my grandparents marriage cert obtained a few years ago from the Trafford Register Office, where they then lived and where I still live, his father's name is given as David.

Like I said, names can be wrongly transcribed or copied, but I spent years believing about David, so I want to set the record straight and convince myself that my present research back to the 1840's has not been a waste of time.

I already have 5 Thomas Murray certs, all wrong, so I'm getting frustrated now.

I have the marriage cert of the couple I believe are his parents - Walter
Dan Murray and Jane Ann Leigh, I just need to be sure.

Thanks again
