Comstive family

I have just come across an Alice Comstive who married a William Rigby abt 1897.

She was born abt 1879.

Her parents were William (a Saddler) and Mary (a Poulterer) and in 1881 census they lived at Matts Brow.

In 1891 census they lived 51 Sunny Road.

Siblings are Thomas, William, Jane, Matthew and Ruban.

It's an unusual name so hopefully someone out there knows them.

I have her as an (unproved) 7th cousin twice removed!

But I think there are a few dodgy links along the line.

I know absolutely nothing about them

Strangely enough, Dotty, Comstive is not an unusual name in the Marshside/Churchtown area - not as prolific as Rimmer of course, but ................. Wink

The name may have been or is popular in these parts but there's not many on the 2002/03 electoral roll. I will PM them to you Dotty. You never know one of them may be a connection Smile

More info

Well I know a bit more about them thanks to baxtersp who sent me some lovely photos of their grave stones. Jane did PM me further details of extended family to contact...no news there yet.

Mary Comstive RIGBY lived in Botanic Road in 1901 and was an ironmonger. So maybe she had the shop that became Gorse's. I'll have to dig a little bit further...

Thanks to everyone for bothering to read and help!

William COMSTIVE senior (? - 1820 - ?) & junior (1792-18

G'day, I'm researching William COMSTIVE, born Garstang, Lancs, c1792, son of Ann.
William had an uncle, also named William COMSTIVE, who was still alive in 1820. William the elder was successful in manufacturing.
William the younger was a traveller: at first with the 29th Regiment, to Spain & Portugal; then to North America (War of 1812); then back to Europe for Waterloo. After discharge, he settled in Barnsley WRY, where he became active in local politics. By 1820, he was in York Castle, and convicted of High Treason. He was spared the death penalty. He was transported to Australia, arrived VDL 1821; married 1822; two sons, Thomas & Daniel. William was sentenced to death, again, in 1834, for forgery. This time he went to the "hell hole of the Empire": Norfolk Island. After eight years there, he was pardonnedd for his second conviction, but not the first., In 1842, he went to Sydney, to continue serving his 1820 sentence. In 1845, his health deteriorated, and he was an invalid until his death in 1858. His two sons were still alive in VDL in 1845, but nothing more is known of them: no record of marriage or death in VDL/Tas, Victoria, or NSW.
The COMSTIVE name seems to be mostly connected with Lancashire.
I have found a reference to the following family in the Lancashire Quarter Sessions, 1847: "Order of removal of William Comstive, Martha his wife, and Alice, Mary and Angelina their children; Clitheroe to Oswaldtwistle", but have not yet connected this family with the others I am chasing.
I will be please to hear from any other researchers.

Better late than never...

Well, we lost that football match and I have been in mourning until now...  sorry but your lot and my lot are not related.  I would have sent a PM you but sadly you haven't registered.

Hope you get this message,

William Comstive and Mary Wright Comstive are actually my great-great-grandparents, so I am (distantly) related to Alice Comstive Rigby. Only a month ago, I visited their grave in St Cuthbert's during a trip home to see my parents.

William was born in Formby but his parents married at St Cuthbert's. He had lots of siblings.

Alice's siblings were Thomas (my gt-grandfather), William, Matthew, Jane and Richard (not Ruban: a transcription error on the 1901 census). They have several descendants in the Southport area.

I know more details, if anyone is interested.

Hello Dotty

This might be William and Alice Rigby (nee Comstive) at St Cuthbert's.  I have Alice as my 4th cousin 3 times removed at the closest, although it looks like I share 80 common ancestors with her according to my family tree software.
baxtersp

Here's William and Mary Constive (nee Wright I think), Also at St Cuthbert's.
baxtersp

Here's William and Mary Comstive's son Matthew and his wife Ann (nee Wright).  This is the second Matthew born, the first one died in 1872 I think, but I don't have his gravestone.
baxtersp

Here's William and Mary's son Thomas Comstive with his wife Betty (nee Wright again I think).  John Comstive and Alice Little (nee Comstive) are Thomas and Betty's children - John married Florence Ellen Bridge and Alice married John T Liddle.
baxtersp

I got a few others if anyone wants them - Jacob and Lilian Margaret Comstive at St John's Crossens (Jacob was William and Mary's grandson through their son Thomas), William and Gertrude Comstive with an Alice Brookfield at St Cuthbert's (William interred in the Isle of Man), a Doris Comstive buried with her parents William and Alice Johnson at St Cuthbert's and lastly Jacob and Ellen Comstive (nee Watterson), Jacob was the brother of the William Constive that married Mary Howard.
Dotty

Wow

Thanks Steve, for the lovely photos and Helen for the offer of information.

I shall peruse my Comstive family again and see what's what and who's who...
