Ralph's Wife's LaneI have been asked this in an email today - Can anyone help?
Hi there,
We're doing a feature for Tony Snell's breakfast show on road names and the stories behind them….We're interested in Ralph's Wife's lane, a suggestion from one of our listeners this morning…. Does anyone at the society know where the name comes from or put us in touch with someone who does?
Hope to hear from you shortly...

Ralph's wifeThe following is copied from 'North Meols and Southport' by Peter Aughton
It appears in the appendices at the back of the book
The traditional story (as told by Bulpit) is that Ralph was a smuggler and the lane was where his wife perished from exposure when waiting for him to return from one of his expeditions. The story might be true but Ralph was long before Bulpit's time, for the lane is shown as Ralph Lane by Bankes in 1736.
I'll see if it is mentioned in anything else that I have.
