Richard Rimer of the 1630sI was browsing through the Lancs CRO Catalogue and came across a reference
DDIN 46/4 document dated 14th July 1631
The description was 'Richard Rimer of Birkdale alias Black-Dic, husbandsman'.
Although I have Rimmers galore in my tree I don't think I have this one but I was intrigued by his alias. Does anyone lay claim to him? Has anyone got or seen the document or can tell me what this husbandsman got up to in his spare time?

I can't get beyond the late 1700's with any of my Rimmers because the early baptism records only mention the father and when it's John the son of John ?????????????? I suspect that Black Dick was so called because he had black hair or was maybe darker skinned than others around? Nothing to do with Johnny Cash and his Man in Black

Black Dick could be my ancestor, Richard Rymer, born 1631, married Ann Thomas--the dates and names seem to fit... sounds like a pirate! Love to learn more about this!

Fascinating...I have a great-uncle who was nicknamed "Humpy Jack" because he was a hunchback.

Well Dotty, lets just play it safe and discourage any wild speculation over the possible physical attributes that might have given rise (no pun) to the "Black Dick" nick!!!

Lol, I just couldn't resist the opportunity to continue the resurrection--carefully spelled--of this thread! After all, he may well have been my grandfather 9 generations removed!
Rumour within my family also has it that a certain Rimmer ancestor of ours was the last offender to be condemned to the village stock... Can't wait to visit and find out for myself.

Upon reflection, I think Black Dick is more likely to have been the first Rymer on my list: Richard Rymer, born 1578??? That would make him 52 years old in 1631.

According to the book "Families and Cottages of Old Birkdale and Ainsdale" edited by Sylvia Harrop, the first reference to a mill in Ainsdale is in a lease to Richard Rimmer of Birkdale, 'commonly called Black Dick' in 1631! There is also a 'tree' outlined from Richard Rymer (1680) down to 1845. The North Meols FHS do sell this book

I say...If he was a miller then maybe his nickname was because he was white from the flour...

You might be on the right track Dotty... But if that's the case and the nickname relates to the flour he mills, don't you think it's more likely that he was a pumpernickel specialist???
