Very good for lookups of things you don't have access to, and for general help if you reach a brick wall.

This is the site where someone found a reference to Anne Marshall's transportation for me, in a book written by a guy who specialises in American immigrants. It's held at Liverpool Library, so I'm going to get there in the next week or so to check it out.

It's also good for finding a good few people to throw in ideas when you've run out of them yourself.

www.freebmd.org.uk fabulous service, particularly for marriages

www.lancashirebmd.org.uk provides exact spouse, rather than a choice of 2 or 4 as in BMD, also gives church of marriage, where applicable... sadly, few Southport marriages online, but many Liverpool ones already transcribed.

www.a2a.org.uk Really excellent source of information on manorial records and local sessions court records, with brief description of the document, so even from a free search you can often find the name of the father of an illegitimate child. Also great for identifying the location of manorial records (such as Weld Blundell at Liverpool, not Lancashire).

Lancashire marriages and Obituaries. Limited time range, but useful and interesting for the periods offered. Covers 1811-1908, though not all years inbetween.

It's different to Rootsweb, Rootschat is a UK board with a separate forum for each county, so you can access people who have obscure databases and resources for a specific place... great for when you have a little research in a county outside your own main area of interest but perhaps not enough connection to justify buying the resources, and too far away to easily access local research facilities.

I am new here, but hope you dont mind me adding the Canadian folk on this site are really helpful and very good. They just helped me trace a relative I was at a loss with, seems the chap changed his name and area a few times.

Canadians have just tracked him and his family down and sent me death certs for him. They are a great bunch. Just hoping the Irish lot are as good for my next quest.
