Samuel Newton

Has anyone come across anything for this chap

Samuel Newton c1828
Cause of death-thrown from an engine & run over at Burscough on 27 March 1854

Burial: 12 Apr 1854 St Cuthbert, North Meols, Lancashire, England
Samuel Newton -
   Age: 26 years
   Abode: Little London
Buried by: Jonathan Jackson Officiatg. Minister
   Register: Burials 1846 - 1867, Page 80, Entry 638

I was asked a question re the type of engine it would be.
Looking at the old maps there seems to be a railway going through Burscough on a 1848? map.
So could I tell the person asking it was a railway engine, or what other kinds of engines would he be working with in 1854

There is a report in the Liverpool Mercury dated Friday 31 March 1854 as followe:

Samuel Aughton (sic) , a resident of Little London, engaged as guard of a truck train on the Manchester and Southport Railway, was, unfortunately, run over by an engine, on Monday (ie 27th), at New Lane station, near Burscough, and received such severe injuries to his legs that Mr Barron, surgeon (who was promptly sent for), found it necessary to amputate both limbs. -Southport Free Press

I imagine a "truck train" is what we would call a "goods train"

Thanks Brian, got to be him don't you think.
Wonder why he was named as Aughton though.
Press got it wrong again

Brian, where do you find all these bits of newspaper articles. I googled but nothing came up.

These articles are on the Gale database of 18th century British newspapers. The Liverpool Mercury and Preston Chronicle/Guardian are on it, and there is a Manchester paper; unfortunately the Southport Visiter is not there, but quite a lot gets reported in Liverpool & Preston.

I think there are a couple of threads discussing how best to access it in the Useful Websites forum; basically you need online access to a library which subscribes to that database. Lancashire Libraries is probably the best bet; I can also get it via the National Library of Wales "Athens" login

Will try and have a go at looking at them

This Samuel is a bit confusing. I cannot find a baptism for him, and wondered whether this may be his mother's marriage

Frances Newton
Gender: Female
Spouse's Name: William Houghton
Marriage Date: 18 Feb 1828
Marriage Place: Ormskirk, Lancashire, England

If he was born before she married perhaps he took his step father's name?? for a while and then reverted to Newton,
Samuel's marriage cert in 1852 states his father was a John Ward

Sad

What a sad tale...
