Gillies lookup

Bob,
Thank you for the kind offer to do a lookup.  Is there any listing for either a William Gillies, John Gillies or Ellen/Helen Gillies?  By the way, what is a Seed's Directory?  I have seen this listed several times.  Thank you.
Jane

Its a local directory. I assume it was compiled by someone called Seed....

Simply a list of streets and residents

Re: Seed's Directories

Thank you, Jane.  Is it possible to purchase past directories?
bobg

Seed's Directories were published by R. Seed and Sons, Printers & Publishers, Preston.  The only place where a copy might be obtained today is a used book store.  I have a copy of the 1914-15 issue and willing to do look-ups.
Jane

Put it into google and found - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Seeds-Dir...strict-Descriptions/dp/1845514238

£17.75 from Amazon but out of stock

It doesn't seem to give a year either

kaiello - I think I checked some directories for the name Gillies ages ago......but I can't look at my notebook because everything is hidden. Decorating

Always happy to check again if you let me know when you want me to look
Yvonne

If you have an Ancestry subscription the Seeds Directory is available on there.

There was a Mrs Helen Gillies listed  1924/25 at 47 Duke St.

In the 1914/18 directory Mr William Gillies, bath chair man, is shown as head of the household at 47 Duke Street.

Re: Seed's Directories

Thank you Jane, Bob, & Yvonne!  These are my Gillies at 47 Duke St.  I know because that was the address given on William Gillies marriage certificate in 1931 to Nan Wright.  And John Gillies, William's father seems to have been still living because he was listed as father of William, working at Vulcan Motor Works as the Storekeeper.  A question please - what happened to the people who worked for Vulcan Motors once it was sold?  Did it remain in Southport, or did the company move out and people possibly had to move to a new location if they wanted to continue in their jobs?  It was sold to Tillings-Steven in 1937, which I believe was based in Kent.  My quest continues for John and William (and Nan), and the last that we know they were in Southport is in 1937 when my grandmother returned to Southport to visit William.  William probably worked for Vulcan, also,as he listed his employment as a transport motor driver.  Many, many thanks!
Jane

i asked about the Vulcan works in the library last week. They started in Vulcan Street but moved to Crossens - not sure when. They closed in 1936 and the company was sold to the Brockhouse Company in 1938

I have a book with a photo of the production in the 1920's but at the moment have no scanner working so can't post it on here
