SPENCER

Posted by Dotty

I am looking for details of James SPENCER born about 1781 and married to a Margret BARTON 10 Dec 1805.

He does not appear on the North Meols Parish Register according to NMFHS ONE for Spencer.

Their children, Mary 1809, Thomas 1811, Ann 1814 and Samuel 1816 all appear and were born Churchtown.

What can this mean...was he born somewhere else?

Looking forward to hearing from all you knowledgeable peeps out there...

James Spencer

Hello Dotty

James says he's 60 (ish) on the 1841 Census, but I think he was closer to 70. I haven't got a gravestone for him yet, but according to Joyce Otterstrom:-

burial 1844 October 14 James Spencer of Rowe Lane age 73

This fits in with this baptism

chr 1771 July 7 James s. of Richard & Mary Spensor of Rowe Lane

and James does name his first son Richard and his first daughter Mary, it does seem to fit.

I've got all of James & Margaret Spencer's children married off, but I haven't updated my records on this line since the 1841 Census came out. I'll fill the 1841 returns in and then I'll post what I've got.

Regards

Steve

Wow...

Steve I am gobsmacked....

Thank you for this information. I wondered about the James' age on the 1841 census and the PR which showed he was baptised in 1771 not 1781 as I expected.

How did you get all this information and from where. You show me up...

I haven't read though everything yet...it's just amazing.

I'll be in touch again,

from

Grateful from Churchtown... wav
Bez

Correct me if I'm wrong, Steve, but is this from the Joyce Otterstrom site?

At least she does put in corrections if you can prove her to be wrong.

It's a good starting point for everyone researching North Meols families if you just bear in mind that she makes mistakes, just like the rest of us. Hope you do manage to find a photo of the grave, but not everyone got a headstone, unfortunately.

I think it's really great of you to put the info on the forum for everyone to read. Well done.

Hello Bez

Yes, all of the early stuff is from Joyce's "Park" database. The bits I've put on usually start from the 1841 Census onwards.

I send her bits and pieces myself every now and again, as well as the odd gravestone photo.

Hi everyone:

I enjoyed reading your postings of James Spencer et al. I am part of this line - from Richard Spencer, son of William Spencer and Isabell Bradshaw. A few more tidbits for you: the name of Richard Spencer's third wife was Elizabeth Breese, born 1828. Also, Richard's younger brother Thomas, (I think my great grandfather was named for him) was part of the Eliza Fernley lifeboat crew. He died a few days later and left a widow and young son. The widow also died a few months later, leaving the son an orphan.

I have James Spencer's parents as Richard Spencer b1743 and Mary Critchley. This Richard's parents were James b. 1706 and Ann, no surname given. This James was born toWilliam Spencer and Ma(ry) Rymer in 1680.

Cheers, Bobbie
PS. In the 1881 census, there is a 12 year old servant, Jonathan Williams living with Richard and Emma. This Jonathan, who was known as Jack, emigrated to Vancouver and ended up living with my grandparents who emigrated sometime after he did. My grandmother was Isabella Spencer, daughter of Thomas William, son of Richard. I have always wondered what the connection to the family was. Do you have any knowledge of Jonathan (Jack) Williams. Do you think he may have been Emma's son? According to her marriage certificate, she was a spinster.
Jane

Have you found him in 1871? If you need help email or PM me (private message) and I shall see what I can find. He may just be with his parents or as you suspect mother.

Other than that the only way is to send for his birth certificate or search for a baptism.
Jeremy

Spencers

Very interesting to read this - Bobble alerted me to it.

James Spencer and Margaret Barton were my great-great-great-great grandparents. They had William (who married Isabella Bradshaw).

One of William and Isabella Spencer's children was Thomas.

Thomas was born in Hawside and in the 1881 census lived at 32 Hall St. and was aged 41 with wife (Jane Alice) aged 39 and William aged 6.
At time of death, lived 53 Hall St, Southport. Died on 10/12/1886 as a member of the Eliza Fearnley lifeboat crew that perished trying to save the Mexico. Newspaper report: "A volunteer member of the crew, left a widow and one son (aged 11). He was the owner of some boats and some property, and his widow was sufficiently provided for. She survived him by but a few weeks, as she died in March 1887." See book on the Southport Lifeboat Disaster and also items in Botanic Gardens Musem in Churchtown. Seehttp://www.mightyseas.co.uk/articles/inquiry_report.htm (and associated pages).

See also Lifeboat memorial in Duke st Cemetery.

After the death of her husband, William, Isabella moved to 10 Hope St. (where my grandmother and her brothers and sisters were brought up). She is buried in Duke St Cemetery. To locate her grave start facing that of James Spencer and Susannah (nee Wright)'s grave (no. 5615 - purchased by Susannah Spencer of 1 Hope St on 2/10/1907 for James Spencer, fishmonger - date of purchase was customarily date of death) move forward to the next row of graves then go three to the left to find Thomas Spencer and Jane (5738). Go back to James and Susannah's grave then go straight forward three rows and here is Elizabeth Spencer (5733). John William Spencer and his wife Emma Aspinall in Section 23 grave number 346.

Thomas' son, William, was aged 11 at the time of his father's death, mother died a few days later and he was fostered. Received a payment of £28 from the lifeboat disaster fund on 23 May 1889. Apprentice joiner until age 21. In 1901 census he is given as living at 8 Cypress Road, Southport, aged 26 and married to Annie (age 25), no children at this stage. Joiner on own account. I have no further details but note that under Ormskirk (the reg district for Southport), a William Spencer married an Annie Grady. Maybe this is he?

Another son of William and Isabella Spencer was Richard, from whom Bobbie is descended.

A further son was James Spencer who was my great-great-grandfather and about who I can clearly remember my grandmother talking.

He was married to Susannah Wright. His location is given in various censuses as follows;
1851 25 m. Susannah, Isabella 6mth, Hawes Side La
1861 35 b North Meols. Hawes Side, N Meols. Fisherman.
1871 1 Hope St, fisherman
1881 1 Hope St
1901 1 Hope St
He was a fishmonger (on own account). Had own fishmonger's shop & owned 2 boats (the Morning Star & a second one which foundered beyond pier at Southport on a sandbank called Spencers Brow).
I understand he built the Jam Chapel (Church Street Methodist, and then later St. Mark's Methodist, now a doctor's surgery. See picture at: http://www.merseydoctors.org.uk/stmarks/practice/index.htm) as well as 5 houses and shops for his children in Ashley Road. See sign Spencers Place high on wall above shops in Ashley Rd (parallel to Hope St).

After James' death, Susannah moved to 10 Hope St.
James & Susannah are buried together with William (pre-deceased son) in Duke St Cemetery, Southport, near Thomas & Jane, Grave 5615 Section R.

One of their six children was Annie Spencer who married John Cook Yates and they had seven children, one of whom was my grandmother. If any-one wishes further information about the descendants of James and Susannah Spencer, please email me: jeremy.higham
@virgin.net

Jeremy John Spencer Higham

PS My brother and I, each of our sons and other relatives have Spencer in their name, named after James Spencer (a 'good man who built the jam Chapel' according to my grandmother).
Jane

I have a feeling Bez & Dotty will be interested in this. They are both busy today but will probably read and reply tomorrow
Bez

Quite right in your observations there, Jane.

The NMFHS went on a visit to the Jam Chapel while it was still a church and they told us that the bulk of the money to build it came from Sir William Pickles Hartley, with a contribution from James Hall, who was also a jam manufacturer - hence the name.

William Hartley laid the memorial stones in 1890 (with Mrs Pilkington, Mrs Unwin and Mr Charles Scarisbrick), the congregation having to worship in the Cambridge Hall following a major fire at their London Street Church. The new Primitive Methodist Hall and Sunday School in Derby Road were opened on September 2nd 1891 by Mrs Hartley and the sermon was preached by Rev. A T Guttery. (Bland, Annals of Southport).

William Hartley believed in people helping themselves - not having it all on a plate, so a significant amount of money was raised by the congregation themselves, conditions imposed routinely by Hartley for many of his building projects.

Christiana Hartley later provided new gates for the Chapel and both she, and her father before her, had their funeral services at the Jam Chapel before interrment at Trawden (Colne).

According to my grandmother, her father and his brothers had helped to build several of the Methodist Chapels in the North Meols area, and by that I understood her to mean that they provided physical labour and literally built them (having no money to spare) and this does seem to have featured in church building in the past when you look at how quickly some of them seem to have been put up.

James Spencer may have contributed money or labour, or maybe both. I would be interested to hear if you find any records which list his involvement.
Jeremy

I can't add anything to this other than to say that my grandmother also told me the chapel was financed by Hartleys (as you indicate), that James Spencer was a lay preacher in the methodist church, that he built the chapel (not sure whether through contributing labour, funds or both) and that he also built (again I am not sure what 'built' this means) the 5 houses in Ashley Street called Spencer's Place.

I also know, from Bobbie, that his brother Richard (b.1833) was one of the founders of Zion Methodist church (see Jubilee booklet in 1925 for details).

Jeremy
Bez

Hi Jeremy - I'd be inclined to think that he physically helped to build it - that is what they seemed to do, although he obviously did have money as he had his own shop and 2 boats. It was nice that he was also a lay preacher there.

Have you looked at the Probate Calendars at your local Record Office? Even if he left no will I would imagine that a Grant of Probate would be required to transfer the property to his legal heir. Also there were the properties in Ashley Street if not already transferred to his children. Sounds like a man of some substance even if not a major benefactor of the Jam Chapel. Was there an obituary published when he died?

Interesting the link with Zion Methodist - my 4 x gr grandparents, John and Ellen Hooton were founder members of Churchtown Independent Chapel, now the URC on Botanic Road, and as I said previously, my gr grandfather and his brothers helped to build some of the local Methodist churches, but I don't know which ones.

I will try and remember to look for the Spencer sign in Ashley Street - it's really interesting to know how things got named, also Spencers Brow.
Bobbie1545

Hello:

As well as being connected on the Spencer line, I am also connected to the Hooton line, through John and Ellen Hooton (m. 10.22.1780), down to James and Jenny nee Sutton (m. 4.30.1805) to Hannah Hooton (b. 1810) who married Thomas Halsall in 1829. Their daughter, Hannah Halsall b. 1831 married John Mawdesley, grandson of the Rev. John. This Hannah was my 2xgrandmother. I probably should put this on the other site, but I thought you might be interested to see the Spencer - Hooton connection here. It was Richard, my 3xgrandfather who was one of the founders of the Zionist Church.

Cheers, Bobbie
Bez

Hi Bobbie - you and I are related then, but you are a closer relation to my cousin Ron Hooton of New Zealand as he is also a descendant of James and Jenny (Sutton). He wrote a book about the Hootons of North Meols which is in the NMFHS library and can be borrowed by UK members.

There will also be a new book published soon on the history of the URC to mark the bicentenary of the building of the church - I have been helping the author with some family details and if you have any information at all on James Hooton please pm me as he is one of the people we have been trying to verify details for.
HodgePodge

I have a link to this family through James Spencer and Isabella Bradshaw and their son, Henry.

It seems Henry had an illegitimate daughter with Elizabeth Duckworth in 1864, 2 years before the couple married (though I haven't confirmed this with certificates, the child was called Elizabeth Spencer Duckworth). Further children sfter marriage were William 1866, Isabella 1868 and Elizabeth 1871. Elizabeth Duckworth was daughter of Thomas Duckworth and Margaret Peet or Rimmer and her sister, Isabella Duckworth, lived with the Spencers in 1871. Elizabeth died in 1873, and later that year, Henry Spencer married Jane Slater (though carrying her previous husband's name of Jackson). Her maiden name was Jane Slater, born in Ireland who came to North Meols and married 1) Peter Ball. 2) Robert Jackson 3) Henry Spencer... I'm assuming she buried each one before moving onto the next!

In 1881 Jane Slater/Spencer is cited as born Ireland, and in 1891 and 1901 Henry's wife, Jane is said to be born Liverpool. This could mean this is a different Jane, but with a similar age, no death found for a Jane Spencer, and no marriage record of Henry Spencer to a Jane after 1881, I suspect it's the same woman who has lied about her birthplace. Henry had no known children with Jane Slater.

Henry and Elizabeth's son, William, married Sarah Elizabeth Hulm. I have family bible entries for the Spencer-Hulm marriage and children of William and Sarah Elizabeth, who were cousins to my Grandmother, Elizabeth Bury Hulm.

1871: Henry Spencer was mate on a fishing boat, with his brother, Thomas, as master. The boat was called "Isabella"... so I suspect it was named after their mother.

I am a klutz...

I cannot believe I have missed this thread from baxtersp onwards...and it is a mine of information!

I am going to go through everything and print it out for my records and put it in order for my family.

I've been doing so much on this mob recently - could have saved quite a bit of time & effort if I'd spotted this thread, plus I've missed one line completely - that of William Spencer & Isabella Bradshaw Shocked
They're not actually my blood relations this far back, but there's a lot of intermarrying with my lot, starting with William's siblings Samuel, Richard and Thomas Exclamation
I think I'd better work carefully through Steve's posting

One thing is puzzling me (only one??)

In his reply to Steve's posting Jeremy says
Quote:
After the death of her husband, William, Isabella moved to 10 Hope St.

I have William & Isabella on the 1871 Census living at 53 Kensington St (as does Steve); but on the 1881 Census, at the same address William is living with a second wife, Mary Ann, who is about 20 years his junior.

I think William died a few months later in 1881; Isabella died in 1871(?)

Or have I got the wrong end of a very big stick? I don't think I'm going to spend much more time on William & Isabella's line as I can't get them related to me, (unless I come across another marriage of course  Laughing )
Brian
Jeremy

My mistake - I have checked and it was Susannah Spencer (nee Wright b. c1826) who moved to 10 Hope St on the death of her husband (James Spencer b. 1826).
