Re: Churchtown MI'sAnyone need any gravestones looking up?
I've photographed most of the stones at Churchtown (St Cuthbert), as well as all those that survive at Banks (St Stephen) and Crossens (St John). They're all on my hard drive and I've got them indexed by surname so it's easy enough to search.
I can't guarantee I'll have the stone your looking for, but if I do your welcome to a copy. Another visit should finish St Cuthberts off, and then my next stop will be Tarleton I think.

Amos and his wives are buried in the Churchyard of St John's Church, Rufford Road, Crossens. I'll have a look and see if I've got Thomas's gravestone.

I think this is Thomas senior's gravestone in the Churchyard of St Cuthbert's in Churchtown. I'll have a look for young Thomas after I've had my tea.

No sign of Thomas and Lily I'm afraid, they could be in part of the churchyard I haven't photographed yet. Lily's my 3rd cousin 3 times removed at the minute.
I haven't photgraphed any of the churchyard's in Tarleton yet, but I'll probably get round to them sooner or later.

i have already found his wife isabella 1815 -1902 and 2 of their daughters at st mark,s in scarisbrick. i know the family had all been baptised and married at st cuthbert,s so thought he might be there.

and margaret(peggy) higham died 26 feb 1842 burial st cuthberts.
also what is the earliest dates on the headstones you have come across, as i have howards dating as far back as c1500 all recorded as burial st cuthberts according to rootsweb .

Hello Gill
Sorry about the wait. I didn't get an email saying someone else had replied to the post, it probably got knocked back by my email provider, the spam filter's a bit viscious.
No sign of Jospeh I'm afraid. He might still be in St Cuthbert's somewhere but I haven't come across his gravestone yet.

Hello Steve,
Do you have a photograph of the grave of Robert Gregson, born 1796, possible date for his death Sep qtr 1856 or Jun qtr 1857. I am particularly interested in knowing if his wife is named on the gravestone.

Hi Steve
Is there any trace of a stone for Thomas & Margery Halsall? The date would be post 1861 as there is no trace of them after that census (apart from a couple of possible death records for Thomas) By 1871 two of their children (10 & 11 years old) are in hospital, another (13) working as a servant
Many thanks

Hello Brian
No luck with a gravestone for Thomas and Margery I'm afraid. I couldn't find them after 1861 either.

| That's right Nathan & Ellen are my great grandparents. Nathan who was found floating off Southport pier. From the inquest seems he may have hit the bottle in the weeks preceding.
Are they buried in St C's by any chance?

No luck I'm afraid Brian, they could there and I haven't found them or they could be buried elsewhere in Southport.

There is a Nathan Jackson, husband of Ellen, buried in St Cuthbert's. He died on the 12th July 1908 aged 52 years and was buried on the 15th. The address given was High Park Road and the officiating minister was George Z Edwards, Vicar of Crossens.
His wife Ellen died on 7th Dec 1916 and was buried on the 12th, aged 59 years, by the Rector of St Cuthbert's R B Blakeney. Her address at the time of death was 3 Bright Street.
St Cuthbert's do actually have a location for their grave and I could email their plan with the location to you if you want, either or both of you - just let me know.

Just done some more checking and there is an Ellen and a Donald Watkinson also buried in this grave.

You are a star! That's them - the dates are exact
Ellen & Donald Watkinson are interesting. Nathan & Ellen's daughter (also Ellen) married a Peter Watkinson in 1905. They certainly had children named Donald and Ellen-Annie. Both however grew up and married; so not quite sure who these other residents are.
Steve these are the Watkinsons I think I mentioned in some of our other correspondence.
Other daughter Clara (my grandmother) was still at 3 Bright Street when she married in 1919.
Please do email me the details. I'm not going be up there anytime soon, but maybe if some other really really kind person is passing maybe they could take a quick snap
Many thanks again

Hopefully Steve might be able to do that sometime soon - I've sent him the details but there are problems because St Cuthbert's plans of the churchyard are incomplete - and one of the sections is this one. On the bright side the NMFHS has recorded the inscription and I think the reason Steve missed it is because the grass had grown over it (he certainly did a grave only 2 rows nearer the church). The last burial was in 2006 so the stone should still be visible.
I will give you the details from the gravestone when I have a bit more time, but this was just a quick check on my emails before I go to the theatre.

Bez
|
This is what the NMFHS has recorded for this grave.
"Small sandstone headsone becoming encroached by grass. In loving memory of NATHAN JACKSON the beloved husband of ELLEN JACKSON who died July 12th 1908 aged 52 years. Also of the above ELLEN JACKSON who died December 7th 1916 aged 59 years. Also ELLEN WATKINSON died December 27th 1939 aged 57 years."
Ellen Watkinson was buried on 30th december 1939 by J N H Tredennick. Her address was 94 Shellfield Road. Donald Watkinson was buried on the 9th November 2006 aged 92 years and the service was taken by Fr. Tom Leigh of St Patrick's. There's no address, he died in hospital and it just says "burial in existing grave".

Thank you Bez & Steve
Next task is to ask my mother why I don't remember my father's cousin Donald!!
Three generations in the grave - I wonder where the two other spouses are?. I know that side of the family had connections with Grange-over- Sands and Cartmel. Mum will probably know!

You would need to contact Bez for the location of the grave and she could (possibly) tell you if there is a monument/kerbstone, etc. (Bez is co-ordinating the St Cuthbert MI Project on behalf of NM(S)FHS)

So far there is no MI for Samuel Newton - I hope to be able to distribute photos for transcription soon, but as these are the ones which Steve took, which have had to be plotted onto our plans of the graveyard, any existing monument will have to be located at some point and transcribed by hand. Sorry.
The only Newton grave which we have a location for is the one previously posted by Steve.
