St Paul's Church, SouthportMy grandmother got married at St Paul's Church, Southport in 1918. Does anyone know what has happened to the church? There is St Paul's Square and St Paul's Street but no church. I did wonder whether the United Reformed church on the corner of Lord St and Duke St was originally St Paul's Church.The internet comes up with no clues at all. Can anyone help please? |

It must have been knocked down. There are flats where it was. I shall see if I can find anything in one of my books and get back to you.......unless someone else comes along with the answer | ||

I can't find anything in my books other than the date it was built - and that information is on the forum.

Yes it was knocked down. I got married there in 1971, Husband's father had burial service there and that was end of Dec 1980, so after that.
It was on the corner St Paul's Street but facing onto St Paul's Square as well. Going from the Square onto St Pauls St it was on the left hand side Just found this on the Diocese web Southport St Paul 26.10.1988 01.11.1989 Demolition and disposal of site |

I believe that St Paul's Church merged with St Philip's Church (Scarisbrick new Road) which then became St Philip and St Paul with Wesley! Maybe Lancashire Record Office would have some information? | ||

GENUKI site have a some questions about St Pauls

My husband (who was an altar boy there)says there was a school there but no church yard Also went on their map site for Churches in Southport. I cannot see St Cuthbert's

There is/was no graveyard. When I transcribed burial registers I did Christ Church & Holy trinity - apart from St Cuthberts they were the only burial registers I could find. | ||

Genuki do have a map showing the position of St Cuthbert's - scroll down to the bottom of this page and click on the "show map" link. This brings up a different map with the location. I have no idea why it isn't shown on the other map. http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/LAN/NorthMeols/StCuthbert.shtml I don't know why, but they have given the date of the founding of St Cuthbert's as 1571, and we know that the first Rector is named as Adam the Clerk who was fined half a mark in 1178 for an infringement of the forestry laws. On another point, Lord Street West church was originally an offshoot of Chapel Street Congregational and when Chapel Street closed, the congregation transferred to Lord Street West. In its turn, Hampton Road URC, which closed in January, was itself an offshoot of Lord Street West. |

I say...I have often thought that it would be a good idea to put together a selection of photos that must be available of churches that have been demolished.My second cousin has a photos of the Methodist church that was demolished on Sussex Road. It looked lovely inside... Dotty
