Steel works in North MeolsHello everyone
This is a bit of a shot in the dark but I am wondering whether anyone would know whether there was a mechanics' institute in North Meols in the 1880s/1890s? I have a great great grandfather (at least I think he's my GG Grandfather) called James Butterworth who was a supervisory mechanic/engineer at a steelworks in 1881. He lived in Alexandra Street.
Also, if he had died in North Meols, would his death certificate region have been 'Ormskirk'?
Many thanks

Welcome to the forum
I haven't personally heard of any steel works in Southport although there may have been one nearby. Hopefully someone will come along who knows
Ormskirk was the registration district for Southport.
These sites may help with registration districts - http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/

I believe I have heard of a Mechanic's Institute in Southport, but for the life of me I can't remember where it was (something is saying London Street) - will investigate and get back?

Might help a little and confirms what Sooner replied. There may have been something in a paper of the time but Southport's Visiter newspaper didn't start until 1844.
The local technical college is now known as Southport College and a lot of the old buildings, including a lovely old church that was used as the refectory, have been knocked down.

many of the old institute buildings have been turned into other things or torn down. my uncle roy went to southports to learn to be a precision tooler. if my memory serves me right it was on the backside of mornington rd, round the corner from the church. the one in manchester is now a theatre and the one in accrington is used by the county counsil. the one in bury I believe is a dance club/social center. in the early 20th century there was a call for highly trained men in engineering. each city/area's institute trained men for the local factories and needs. accrington's train boys of 16-25 to work for the railways.
