Temperance Hall, Shellfield Road

Can anyone help

There is a plaque on the side of the Hall (Kirkham Road side) which had names of those who were killed in the war(s). Does anyone know when this was put up?

In fact any information about it at all would be a huge help

I remember going to the hall when it was a library...I was about 9 or 10 at the time.....it was there then so it was prior to 1969.

It might be worth contacting Marshside Road Methodist Church to see if they know - the Temperance Hall has been connected with them for many years

sooner as far as I'm aware the hall itself has been there a lot longer than the 1960's - and I didn't know it was ever a library. Maybe you are thinking of a different hall.

Thanks Seacop - that has answered my question really. As many of you are aware we (Brian & I) are working on a project about the names on the war memorial. One of them is also on this plaque. He has been hard to track down but we think we have found the right one on the Commonwealth War Graves now. Also found his birth - thankfully he has an odd combination of names. But.....he was born and seems to have lived in/near Manchester. So we wondered how his name got on a plaque in marshside. Obviously some family member must have attended Marshside Road Methodist Church

As I understand it the Temperance Hall was built by the Marshside fishermen so they had somewhere to meet and where they could pay in their 'providence' money;  the Marshside brass band would meet and practice there as well - certainly goes back to the very early 1900's if not before

Thanks sooner. Maybe I should ask about other Marshside places that you remember - or people.

they also had a senior center their for many years gran went after grandad died in 1971 it closed in 75/76 and moved over to new center on marshside rd just before you get to stanley sec mod school. and the home for pregnant girls as it was in 75.

I can remember quite a few people and places...roots was drilled into me as a child...plus I listened to the old folks and their tales of kamily and neighbours, it was oh so fascinating to me as a child.

Amazing...

It's funny what you find out from people.  I took a pair of shoes to be repaired and got to talking to the owner...a Mr Rimmer!  He asked me where I lived and then told me how he used to go playing in the fields that my road was built on.

One thing led to another and he ended up describing some of the old characters that he remembered from the area.  One he named turned out to be my great-uncle...small world!
