tents on the beachI have been asked this by the reference library. Someone has called in this evening with some photo's of African style tents on the beach. he thinks it could be the 1920's. Has anyone come across anything about them?
He is going to do some copies and let Matthew in the library have some - hopefully I will get a copy and be able to post it

I seem to remember reading about a film being made on the beach about that time about a desert location! Can't remember where I read it though.

Walter Jesson's book Megasaga has a photograph in (which shows his mother and grandmother) taken from the filming of "A Study in Scarlet" - from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's story of the Mormons desert trek - 1914. It was taken on Birkdale Sands by the former Palace Hotel.
I also believe that there was some filming done on the sands at Southport for one of the many films about Lawrence of Arabia?

Thanks for that. I can put the library out of their misery later

Just to let everyone know the pictures in Megasaga are of horses and caravans - the style you see in old cowboy/Indian films and NOT tents.
I would guess they were there for a film though.

It appears that the photograph in question didn't show tents - so we were being led up the garden path (not by Jane I must add, but by whoever asked her originally). It appears that the 'items' being asked about were more like the ancient African mud huts with grass on top

That was how I first described them. Hopefully If the man gives the library a copy of his photo I can put it on here
