The Fog Bell.

North Meols Civic Society are working with the RSPB and Sefton Council to try to obtain funding to repair and renovate the Fog Bell building on Marshside Road. This, of course, was not the original location of the fog bell, that was on the sea embankment, now the Sefton Coastal Path, about midway between Marshside Road and Millars Pace. The original bell is in the basement of the Museum!
Specifically I am interested in the story of the 7 men who drowned on 26th January, 1869.namely, Peter Aughton,Robert Wright,John Wright,John Rimmer,Peter Wright,William Hesketh and Peter Rimmer.
Are any of these men in your family tree? Have you knowledge of their families?
As well as using the information for the purpose of a presentation we would also like to put the information on our web site which is in the process of being updated and has a new address - www.northmeols.org.uk (we have dropped the Merseyside!!). Really hope someone knows something about one of these men. All, I can think of is looking in newspapers of the time

There are some newspaper reports in the Liverpool Mercury, Manchester Times & Lloyd's Weekly
If yiu have access to the Gale Database of 19th Century Newspapers you can easily find them. Otherwise let me know and I will download & forward them.

I remember the fog bell before it was torn down. I did a sketch of it for art class in 1973 I never got it back from the teacher, I was sad as it was very good and was on display in the school foyer for weeks. Stanley sec mod allowed students to sit on the walls and draw the scenery for art class I remember there being a huge 2 page spread in the visiter you could maybe look it up.
