Thomas Ball - Southport and Westhoughton

Thomas Ball born in Southport c 1802/3 married twice - Elizabeth Andow Meadow and Alice Wareing (her parents were John and Alice Wareing of Southport) - that marriage took place in 1850. Alice had a first marriage to a Mr Gregson but can't find a record of it. Amongst their children was Faith born 1857 and she is my gtgrandmother. Thomas was an Ag.Lab. and the family lived in Park Lane Southport (North Meols). On the 1871 census they had left Park Lane and were all living in Westhoughton and Thomas was then 68 and Alice 48.
My Faith married William Singleton and their first child Thomas was born in Westhoughton and they then moved to Liverpool where my grandfather William Singleton was born and his sister Maud.
From this bit of info. - has anyone any connection with this family/
Thanks - Pat

Thomas Ball (1802/3 to 1893) was my Great Great Grandfather by his first marriage to Elizabeth.  I have just received his death certicate (12DEC1893 - OND 1893 BOLTON 8c/263) and his (second) marriage certificate (02JAN1850 - JFM 1850 ORMSKIRK 21/451) to Alice Gregson (widow aged 24 years) from GRO Southport. This indicates his father was Thomas Ball, and her father was HUGH Waring (not John as indicated in your posting dated 10NOV2006).

I am researching my family tree remotely from my home in Buckinghamshire.  The White/Carr family originates from Liverpool and North Meols. My sources to date have been the 1841 to 1901 Censuses and BMD Certificates.

I have only just found the North Meols (Southport) FHS website and am wondering how it my help me.

Welcome to our forums.  by posting your details you never know who may respond - you may be connected to someone.

You might find it helpful to join the society - full details are on the web site. You will receive 4 magazines a year and when you join your surname interests will get published in the magazine. The society also send a full list of members' interest lists with the Autumn magazine so you may even spot someone with names that connect. Of course the surname Ball is a local favourite Laughing

If you need any help just ask either on the forum - there is a section for that - or via PM and we shall do our best to help

Hiyah  Very Happy
Just been having a quick root.
Now I am not sure if anyone is intrested in the Meadow line but here goes.
Elizabeth Andow Meadow married Thomas Ball on April 29 1823. i don't think that the Andow really has a place i there as on the one name extracts it has Andow them Meadow written in brackets. So I think this was something that couldn't be read properly. Sorry if I am wrong that is just the way I read it.
From what I can see she could be Andow or Meadow.
I have an Elizabeth daughter of George Meadow and Ann Hunt but there is also a death of an Elizabeth Meadow in 1825 that could be her, so not sure if this is the right Elizabeth that maried Thomas Ball.
All this is in Churchtown.
Hope all that makes sense Confused

According to Joyce O's Rootsweb
Alice Waring baptised 26th March 1826
Parents Hugh and Alice nee Cropper. Married 6th Jan 1824.

Not yet been able to find a marriage of Alice Waring to a Gregson though.

Thanks for your contributions.  According to 'Roger's forum posting dated 20Nov 2006 under 'Wareing family', Alice Waring wed Stephen Gregson on 12th Oct 1845.

You see I have been trawling the whole forum for clues!  And I have also found the PARK database - there's lots there to keep me busy for a while.

Good gracious

Well it's amazing what you find if you just look...

I often have a trawl through the old posts just in case something leaps out at me!

Good hunting everyone.  If you are society members and you get a completed family line you could always submit it to Jane for inclusion in the 'family tree' file.

Hullo,  I'm a New Zealander and new to this. My Thomas Ball was born North Meols c 1797, married Alice Hamer at Bolton, 2 children Jane 1824 and George 1826. Second marriage to Esther Haslam, sons James 1831[my gt grandfather] John, Richard, Thomas and William. Esther died 1845, 3rd marriage to Ann Colliersame year. I am not sure how much of this information is correct as I have read different in LDS and Parks. Also 3 different private contacts have given me 3 different lines.  Can somebody please help?   Joan, NZ

Woops! a mistake!!

Reading thru the messages re Balls/Singletons I have made a mistake in one of my postings:  I said that "my Faith (Ball) had married William Singleton"  Obviously a senior moment Embarassed   Faith Ball married Isaac Singleton (see 1881 for family at that time)  1891 shows their other children, William and Maud (William being my grandfather).

I haven't had any luck at all trying to find info on Faith and Isaac's eldest son Thomas H Singleton who was born in Westhoughton and on the 1881 census he was 7 months of age - last seen on 1901 census in family home in Fazakerley Liverpool working as a blacksmith striker aged 20.

Sorry for error - will try to do better Wink

There is a possible marriage on the Civil Registration Index for an Alice Waring (no e) to a Stephen Tregson, December Quarter 1845, Ormskirk Registration District, Volume 21, Page 457.

The Groom's name is Trgson, I've checked on the original indexes, but according to Ancestry.com there aren't any Tregson's anywhere in England on the 1841 or 1851 Census.

Also it looks like there's a death for a Stephen Gregson in Ormskirk Registration District Apr-May-Jun 1847, Volume 21, Page 450.  No ages at death were recorded at this time, so I don't know if this is the death of a child or an adult.

So far Hugh Wareing (Alice's father) is my half 1st cousin 5 times removed, my 2nd cousin 5 times removed, my 3rd cousin 6 times removed and my 5th cousin 5 times removed.  Hugh's wife Alice (nee Cropper) is my 3rd great grandaunt, my 1st cousin 6 times removed and my 3rd cousin 5 times removed.

The marriage is shown in the Gregson ONE for St John's Crossens as taking place on Oct 12 1845 between Stephen Gregson and Allice Wareing, with an e.

Stephen was baptised at St Cuthbert's on Sept 12 1813, son of William Gregson and Jenny Wright.   William and Jenny were married Sept 29 1812 at St Cuthbert's.   Both of these events again from Gregson ONE

A correction to my previous post.   The marriage of William Gregson & Jenny Wright is not recorded in the Gregson one name extract, I obtained the details from the Park database.  Embarassed
