Trams

When did the trams stop running? What was the location of the terminal / tram sheds in Southport ? Was it Boundary Road or something like that ?

I have now solved the mystery of the tramsheds thanks to Janeīs and her husbandīs tip about the new book " Southport in he Age of the Tram"by James Dean and Cedric Greenwood , published by Silver Link 2008.
The tramsheds were the old ones used by the Birkdale and Southport Tramways Company between 1873 and 1902. These were the old tramcars pulled by horses. The second oldest surviving street tramcar body in  England was found ( in the guise of a tea hut in a coal merchantīs yard ) in Banastre Road . It is on display in Woodside Ferry tollhouse.
The depot and stables were situated in Boundary Street by the Southport / Birkdale boundary.Today they are the premises of Karwowski Motors who still retain the name tramshed works on their logo.(see page 20 in book).
Page 21 states how the former tramshed belonged to Butterfieldīs engineering works but does not go any further back into the history of the location. As far as I can judge , Southport corporation took over the tramway after 1902  and later leased it to Isaac Sutcliffe as the premises for his scrap metal business ( marine store dealerīs). In the record I have in my possession after the death of his son Richard Sutcliffe in 1955 entitled : Division of estate on death of Richard Sutcliffe and Cessation of Business it was obviously in later years firmly in the hands of the Sutcliffes . The document states : Butterfield and Co. Purchase money in respect of 97, 99,101, 103 and 103a Boundary street , Southport.5,600 pounds. This was the major portion of what he was able to leave to his remaining relatives . the business by that time being obviously very stagnant .
