Where to send for medals

I recently received my Father's second World war medals. He had never claimed them. In fact I believe a lot of men didn't bother. All they wanted was to get back to some kind of normality and forget the war.

I think you can only claim for Second World War medals

There is no charge although you will have to provide proof of relationship. In my case this meant sending a copy of my Dad's death certificate with the completed form.

Thanks

Hi Jane

Thanks for this information. I will get round to it now.

Jane, did you know for sure that he hadn't claimed them?

It's just that I can never remember seeing my father's but at the moment I am waiting for his Personnel record and am wondering if it may say anything on there that his medals were not claimed.

Yes I knew he had never claimed them. I thought about sending for his record but my cousin sent for her Father's and was very disappointed. It cost her £25 took at least a year to arrive and told her hardly anything. He died when she was 10 so I suppose she hoped it would help her get to know him better. I will be interested to hear what you receive.
Yvonne

I had heard from someone else that their fathers record of service wasn't what they thought it would be, but I had already sent off for it before then.
Will let you know WHEN it comes.

Jane,

Finally received my Father's Records.

Two large sheets (double A4 size whatever that is).

Not an awful lot on it but it says when he got his promotions and which stations he went to and the dates. Date he enlisted,

There is no mention of medals but I assume he would have some, as he did serve in West Africa in 1942.

Did you just write, as I have found a form to download for Medal Application ( for non serving personnel) but not sure whether it is correct to use it?

Errr...

Just a thought Yvonne...I think that if your father had claimed his medals the forces would know. So, as they sent you a form to claim them he prolly hasn't had them....

Just a thought...

Grand day now,

I have found my little book out that explains which medals are which and what they were given for.

1939-45 Star
Basic overseas war-service star for the Second World War. Servicemen generally had to complete 6 months active service to qualify.

The Atlantic Star
Rewarded to those who served in the Battle of the Atlantic.

The Air Crew Europe Star (3 Sep 1939-5 June 1944)
Awarded to RAF air-crews for operational flights from Britain over Europe.

The Africa Star (10 June 1940 - 12 May 1943)
Given for 1 or more days service in North Africa during the above period.

The Pacific Star (8 Dec 1941 - 2 Sep 1945)
Scarce ward granted for service in a number of areas including Malaya & Singapore.

The Burma Star (11 Dec 1941 - 2 Sep 1945)
Granted for service during the ferocious fighting against the Japanese in Burma.

The Italy Star (11 June 1943-8 May 1945)

The France & Germany Star (4 June 1944-8 May 1945)

The Defence Medal
Granted to members of military, civilian, medical & other forces - Home Guard for example.

The 1939-45 War Medal

So I am guessing from that list Yvonne he would have been awarded The Africa Star & The 1939-45 War Medal.

If you send for them and they have already been collected I'm sure they will soon let you know

Thank you for the information about the service record. I may decide to send for my dad's. All these things are nice to have

Thanks Jane

Hello

Morning,

Are you having a rummage through all the threads?  Sometimes I have a spare moment and check the postings.  Yesterday I found a whole thread that I hadn't noticed from earlier in the year...it was fascinating.

I still haven't sent for my father records so maybe I will do that at the weekend when I'm bored to death...
