Who owns a houseHow can I find out who owned a house? I want to know the owner of a house from about 1920-1940 but don't know how to find out
Would it be the owner it was listed under in a local street directory?

House ownerSomeone had a similar query on another forum the other day, and I suggested directories and electoral registers (although of course there are gaps around the second world war). I know this would not always be the owner of the property, but the information might be useful.
Someone else after me suggested the rate books, but I don't know where they would be kept.
I know Southport main Library has the direcories and electoral registers because I was going through them earlier this year. Spookily Joyce Otterstrom was there one day, although I didn't know who she was and didn't speak to her because she was so engrossed.

I have the list of householders in the directories - that lists head of house only but is this the same as the house owner? The electoral registers list man, son & wife and other son who lived at the house until each one died leaving just one son. He moved in with nephew & wife until he died.
I know the library have some rate books but have a feeling they are too old - more 1800's. I will have to ask when I'm next at the library.

Home ownersI know that you can access online the Land Registry. My boss often looks to see how much a house has been sold for. It would be worth checking it out...
