Wigan NewspapersMy Taylor ancestors moved to Southport from Wigan. I've recently obtained the death certificate of one of them who in 1863 drowned himself in the Leeds and Liverpool canal during 'a fit of temporary insanity.' I know this isn't actually a North Meols question, but I am sure someone will know the answer. Where would I find copies of the local Wigan newspaper for that time?

I'd guess Wigan library. You could try phoning to ask if they have them. Their web site -

The History Shop (think it's Library Street, opposite side to the Town Hall) will probably be your best bet; they have a local/family history/archive search room on the first floor; they do have a website, if I can find it I'll post a link
