Wiliam Aughton b1811 Dead EndI have found this forum useful in the past but have never posted before. I am advancing my tree but have come to a dead end on one of the branches. William Aughton b1811 married Ann b1836 and had 4 children (William, Samuel, Margaret & Thomas). I can find him on 1871, 1881, & 1891 censuses only living at Barracks? (Little London), Stamford Rd & Vaughan Rd respectively. He may have had an earlier daughter (Emma Platt) possibly from earlier marriage. In the 1911 census Ann is living with Samuel and is a widow. Does anyone have any idea about his early life, parents etc or where I may get such information? I would be grateful for anything as this is really puzzling me. Ta, Steve.

HelloHi Steve
Glad you've posted your enquiry and I'm sure it won't be long before someone gets back to you with more information. Sadly, it isn't me but now you've posted maybe we'll be hearing a lot more from you.
Good hunting

Thanks for the welcome Dotty.
William is my Mother's Great Grandfather and she knows nothing about him. The 1871 census has him as William Angleton (mis-spelling I think) living at 8 Barracks (I think) by Kensington Rd - Little London, does any one know where this address is exactly? I have seen other references to 'Barracks' around that time. One of the household here is down as a servant if that helps at all.

I have never heard of Barracks - but I'm sure someone else would have done.
Have you tried looking at sites of old maps?
This site might help - http://www.old-maps.co.uk/

Hi Jane,
I am not that good at uploading images, but the reference to 'Barracks'
in the 1871 census is Source Citation: Class: RG10; Piece: 3876; Folio:
111; Page: 10; GSU roll: 842031. A few pages before this there is a
reference to addresses of 6, 4 and 2 Little London and a reference to
'Little London Church Schools' then the Barracks addresses start from
number 33. I wondered if anyone had heard of these schools before.
I will look at the old maps site too - thanks.

Mmmm...Well, you live and learn in this society...I've never heard of Barracks but Little London I have.
Surely someone will have a tiny clue to hasten your search?
