William "Duke" Sutton

Does anyone know where he is buried and what he died of?

Thanks

Neil
Bez

I believe the short answer to that is "no".

The logical place for him to buried is St Cuthbert's but there is no known grave for him.
Jane

Just recently I read somewhere about him being buried in St Cuthbert's. I seem to think it was in a newspaper from the 1980'90's on the Look Back page. I wondered where the information had come from. Oh Seacop where did I see it because I showed you? I knew I should have done a copy...... Crying or Very sad

You read it in the Southport Visiter when you were searching for burials! Surely Dave Gregson would know the answer to this as he is a descendant of the 'Duke'?
Jane

Well not the Duke - but his wife. And he doesn't come on the forum Confused Crying or Very sad

A few years ago we had a couple (members) who were direct descendents of the Duke. Guess what their name was .... RIMMER

I'm a descendant of the Duke as well. My paternal grandmother's maiden name was Sutton. I remember as a child hearing stories about the Duke and his hotel.

I very recently started researching my family tree and hence the questions. I know he was married at St Cuthberts but that is it. I recently went to the Botanical Gardens museum where I remember seeing his portrait. It wasn't on display and the person on duty didn't know of its whereabouts :(
Germaine

Can I ask who was the Duke from what time was he from.
I have got Suttons in my tree Ann / Hannah. This is going back to the late 1700's. she would be my 4xG grandmother ( married Henry Meadows). I have sent for some documents to help but am sure she was the sister of Shadrach b 1766.
Would love to know if he is of this family and if so something about him

Hello Germaine

Joyce Otterstrom has The Old Duke's dates as follows, and I've no reason to believe otherwise:-

chr 1752 Apr 5 William s. of William & Elizabeth Sutton of Church Town (William Sutton, afterwards known as the "Old Duke," the so-called "founder" of Southport.

marriage 1776 Aug 20 William Sutton, (1) musicioner, & Jane Gregson

burial 1840 May 29 William Sutton of Churchtown age 88

I hope this clears it up for you. If you go to Joyce's "Park" database on www.rootsweb.com it will give you more detail on his family.

I hope this helps.

Thanks Steve I bet that he will fit in somehwere along the line.
Will go and look at Joyces web site I know she has Shadrach on there.

Yes I checked up this morning and William Sutton was buried at St Cuthbert's on 29th May 1840, but as I said, the location of the grave is unknown - if only there hadn't been that fire in the bier hut (where the Sexton's records were stored) and that bloke hadn't removed all the marker posts!

Germaine - is it Shadrach Sutton you're after? Died 1829? There is a copy of his Will in the LRO. If you go on the A2A site and put his name in the search engine it will give you details of his marriage settlement and his Will.
Germaine

Hi Bez yes that 's him I have sent for his will should be here next week. In it he left money for Ann and Henry Meadows children ( Ann/ Hannah Sutton). Hoping it will say whether she was his sister or what. Also sent for the settlement when Shadrach married Alice Miller. That should be interesting.

The summary doesn't say that Ann was his sister, only that he left £200 to the children of Ann and Henry - this equates to £50 each so looks very likely. It does give relationships for other people as well.
Germaine

Yes That is right I am hoping it gives more on the full will. It mentions relationships to some of the other bequests. I can't seem to find Hannah / Ann's birth it says she is deceased and in the one name extract it has Ann wife of Henry buried in 1802 so does look like it is her. Buried in St. Cuthberts but of Ormskirk.
