William Ball born 05/08/1823, Southport

Searching for any info on William Ball, born in Southport. He's my g.g.grandfather, and the only info i have is that he had moved to mid wales at some point in the late 19th Cent. the 1901 census has him living in montgomeryshire, as a retired gardener. My g.grandmother wrote William's d.o.b in the cover of a bible she won as a prize from St Cuthbert's sunday school, along with the details of her mother, Jane , born 25/5/1854 and herself, Catherine (known as Katie I believe) born on 11/06/1889 at 3 Bradley's Place, Southport and that she was christened in August 1889 at St Cuthbert's, Churchtown.

Catherine was the only child from this marriage, however, seeing that the old man was in his mid 60s when Catherine was born, could there have been a previous marriage/marriages, with descendants that are on thi forum? Jane was born in mid wales and possibly went to southport into service, where she met William the gardener and fell in love......? Is Bradley's Place still there? Sorry for the barrage of questions, but any info would be appreciated

Thanks
Elwyn

Hello Elwyn

I've found the three of them on School Road in Churchtown on the 1891 Census.

William Ball Head Married 70 Corporation Labourer born North Meols
Jane Ball Wife Married 37 born Montgomeryshire, Camruffie (?)
Catherine Ball Daughter 1 born North Meols

I'm not sure I've got Jane's birth place right, I always have trouble with Welsh place names.

Did you say you have a birth date for William? That would help to narrow him down a bit, as there's a lot of Ball's in these parts.

Regards

Steve Baxter

PS If you want a jpeg of the 1891 Census page PM me your email address an I'll send it to you.
DrElwyn

thanks for that Steve - yep, his d.o.b is August 5th 182
DrElwyn

oops - that should be 1823

I reckoned there might be a few Balls around, however, it makes me feel a lot more optimistic than having to wade through Joneses and Evanses! Finding a Ball makes me feel almost exotic!!
Cheers

Hello DrElwyn

Welcome to the forum. I see Steve's helping you...he's brilliant!

It doesn't take much to make us happy does it? I can imagine how a Ball among the Jones's must be a joy...

Hope you're successful with your search.

Hello All

I've sent Elwyn some Census pages, and I'll transcribe them here just in case they're of any interest. This does seem to be the only William Ball that fits the bill.

Steve Baxter
DrElwyn

Steve - many thanks for your excellent research.
Further to your excellent detective work last week, I've obtained copies of the marriage cert for William Ball to my g.g.grandmother in October 1888, along with the marriage cert of William Ball to a Margaret Howard in 1848. These would be the Wm Ball of the census entries from 1851 to 1891 that you found for me I would think - he's cited as a widower residing in Bradley Place in the latter marriage so it all fits. I'll post these certs on the forum in case they're of any interest

Hi All

New today

I'm doing some transcribing for the LanOPC project - Bolton registers - but I found a "stray" Ball from North Meols today & wondered if anyone was looking for him

Little Bolton, St George's Baptisms
Jan 27 1833
John William Ball s William & Helen Ball of North Meols, fisherman.
Baptised by William Thistlethwaite, Minister.

No idea what a fisherman from North Meols was doing in Bolton at the time!

Hope it helps someone, somewhere

Thank you...

I'm sure someone will be along to 'claim' him very soon. Thanks for letting us know.

I was on holiday in Devon a few years ago and I saw an unusual name in a private graveyard so I noted it down as one of our members was researching that name...it wasn't a link but you never know...one of these days!

Thanks Escapade for the info. My gt grandmother was Faith Ball who married Isaac Singleton but can't see the connection to that family. Think it's great you thought about putting the info here as somebody, somewhere, will be grateful when they find it!

Went to Kirkdale cemetery on Friday trying to find Singleton/Anderson graves (no headstones) so it was a lot of guesswork as to actual spot; had made 4 flower arrangements and in the end they were placed "around the area" - but the thought was there!!! Got home and at night looked through my little book of info and found a list of graves and their numbers I didn't realise I had and one was grave of Faith and her husband and also held an Alice Jane Williams - the info gave sections and numbers and addresses and ages and burial date so I have obviously got it from the records office years ago and forgotten and the annoying thing about it was that they were in one of the sections we had been searching - don't think they had headstones either but should have been close to where we were searching so perhaps, more by good luck than good judgement - the flowers would have been on one of my ancestor's grave after all! The mystery lady I think is Faiths Ball's sister but can check with dates I have to confirm.
Not sure if anyone has had the same problem - holding info of grave but not being able to actually locate it - I have emailed the record office to see if there is any way I can locate exact position of these graves without it costing the earth!! Sadly the personal touch has gone as years ago I rang Anfield cemetery about my grandmother's grave - Anastasia Palmer - and they told me she was on her own in the grave and that he would go and find it and clear around where it should be to expose grave number which he did and then he walked me there and let me plant a small shrub I had taken -------gone are those days!!!
Bez

My great grandmother Rebecca Jones (nee Edge) is buried in Duke Street with 2 of her grandchildren - there is no headstone. I was given the grave number and told the surrounding headstones would be marked (they weren't) so I put flowers on the one I thought it was. Phoned the Crem the next day and said I hadn't been sure about the location so they arranged for me to meet someone on site with a map. As we were walking up to the grave the man said he'd already been to check out the location and "someone has put flowers on it". The fact I picked the right spot was more luck than anything, but in Southport they are always willing to help you find the right location.

That was a nice story Bez - but you can't directly contact Kirkdale cemetery now, in fact the same applies to Anfield I believe so I'm not holding out too much hope of a personal service. There are some cemeteries that still have staff on site but think the number is dwindling - obviously that's the case in the Liverpool area. Could be pleasantly surprised by the reply from the records office .....Pat
Bez

There's no one at Duke Street either - all the staff are now at Southport Crem and so are the records for the public cemeteries. Have you tried phoning Thornton cemetery? I had to phone them a couple of years ago and got a human being.
Jane

I have always phoned Southport Crem and been told where a person is buried. Duke Street has a map of areas then it is a case of finding a gravestone with a number and working from there.

Lincoln crem is also helpful but there is no map at the cemetery and it is huge. I once went with my cousin for the day. we took sandwiches and a drink. Lovely picnic we had on a bench. We even found 2 graves we wanted too

Hello Bez

Kirkdale Cemetery Liverpool is where the family members are buried and they do give you a phone number on a notice board there which is I am told the records office in Liverpool and only contact number for Kirkdale so sent an email instead as it was given on the 'net. Not sure if Thornton would be able to check my graves for me (would that be Thornton Cleveleys in Southport area?) I will let you know how I go on when they get in touch this week.....thinking about your reply again - general enquiries I could contact my local Crem.in Warrington (they are very helpful) but really wanted to ask other questions relating to Kirkdale. The plan I had of the cemetery showed sections which was very helpful (got that off the 'net) but without a gravestone it was difficult to find actual grave as you know...Pat

No, it's Thornton Garden of Rest at Thornton on the way to Liverpool (just past Ince Blundell I suppose). It also has a crematorium.

I don't really see how the crem in Warrington could help with burials at Kirkdale. The staff at Thornton were very helpful towards me a couple of years ago.

Anyway, I'd like to know the outcome - Good Luck.

Didn't explain myself well Bez - what I meant was that any general enquiries as to how the system worked I could ask the local crem/cemetery for their advice but obviously it's Liverpool who deal with their own records etc.

Glad we went on Friday instead of the day we intended to go (today) not ideal trudging around grave stones in the pouring rain - well the flower arrangements we left will get a good watering that we left - will let you know when I have a reply....Pat
