William Gregson, b 1788Does anyone have any information on the family of William Gregson, born 1788? William was married to Jane Linaker, also b 1788, on July 10 1810 at St Cuthbert Church. My query is in regard to their children. William was the brother of James Gregson my gggrandfather.
I have confirmed the following as children of William & Jane Gregson;
From the NMFHS one name extract of the St Cuthbert Parish Register:
Ellen bap Nov 25 1810
John bap Mar 21 1813
William bap Nov 8 1815
Hugh bap Nov 26 1815
John bap Jan 23 1818
Elizabeth Apr 25 1819
From IGI Parish/Chapel Records of baptisms at Churchtown Independent
Jane b Mar 14 1818, bap Apr 5 1818
Thomas b Oct 27 1820, bap Nov 18 1820
Margeret b Sep 11 1826, bap Oct 8 1826
Amos b May 14 1829, bap Jun 14 1829
William & Jane could have switched churches, William’s brother James’ last two children, both named Hugh, were baptised at Churchtown Independent.
However there are two puzzling points about the some of dates in the above info:
William 1815. It seems strange that there would be two baptisms in Nov 1815 in the same family, one for William on Nov 8th & another on the 26th for Hugh.
The same in 1818, John on Jan 23rd & Jane, on Apr 5th baptised different churches.
Is it possible there were two William & Jane Gregson’s, each with their own family? Any information will be appreciated. This message is also being posted on the I – L forum, topic, Jane Linaker b 1788

Hope this helps but I have the Euxton Chapel baptisms. 1813-1837 These I think were also listed as North Meols.
They give occupations and where living on them.
The baptisms for William 08/11/1815 and Hugh 26/11/1815 are listed there and appear to be to different parents as one gives occupation as a farmer (Williams) and the other gives occupation a carpenter (Hughs).
A couple of others were John bap 21/05/1813 & John bap 23/01/1818 to the farmer and Elizabeth bap 25/04/1819 to the carpenter.
It looks like the first John died and there is a burial for a child but aged 5 in 1816.
Regards

Thanks Lorrie, I believe you have provided the explanation It appears to me that there are three families involved.
1. Peter Aughton’s ” North Meols And Southport” (p 210), shows the following children of William Gregson & Jane Linaker and this is the family I am interested in:
Ellen b 1810
William b 1811
Jane b 1818
Thomas b 1820
Margaret b 1826
Amos b 1829
These dates correspond to those shown for Ellen in the North Meols Parish Register and for Jane, Thomas, Margaret & Amos in the Chapel Records for Churchtown Independent. The exception is William b 1811. These records do not show a baptism of a William, son of William & Jane, in 1811. However there is a record in the NMPR for the baptism of a William on Sep 29 1811 base born to Jenny Gregson. William senior had a sister called Jenny, could it be that William & Jane raised this child as their own?
2. The farmer’s family
John b 1813 d ?
William b 1815
John b 1818
3. The carpenter’s family
Hugh b 1815
Elizabeth b 1819
This appears to be a possible explanation of the facts as we know them. Thanks again for your help.

Bob

I have the same family in my tree, William Gregson and Jane Linaker are my 4 times great grandparents.
I had all the children you had and agree it did not look right. I have looked on the IGI on family search and the first 3 children on your list are William Gregson and Jane Linakers.
The next 3 are William Gregson and Jenny Wrights (John 1818 being buried the day after his baptism).
The last 4 are William Gregson and Jane Linakers.
Hope this helps.

Jean,
I did some more digging to find out more about the two William Gregsons and came up with the following. Some of these details were already in my tree however your lead enabled me to fill in some of the gaps. I hoping I am not repeating what you already know.
The two Williams were first cousins descended from Hugh Gregson & Ellen Hunt (nee Jacson/Jackson) my gggg grandparents.
Two of Hugh & Ellen’s sons were John born 1750 and Stephen born 1765.
John married Ellen Boond and two of their sons were William born 1788, who married Jane Linaker, your 4x great grandparents and James born 1792, who married Rachel Baxendale, my 2xgreat grandparents.
Stephen married Elizabeth Culshaw, one of their sons was William born 1792 who married Jenny Wright.

Hi Bob,
Just had a look at my tree, not done much on the Gregsons recently. I have most of what you listed and the second William (1792) but I had not connected him to Jenny Wright. Do you know anything about Jenny. I have just had a look at the St Cuthberts one name extracts for the Wrights and there is a baptism for a Jenny Wright daughter of Nicholas and Alice Wright of Churchtown on 6th July 1794. There is another Jenney natural daughter of Ann of Rowe Lane baptism 27th Feb 1791.
Guess this makes us cousins!

Hi Jean,
The only info I have on Jenny Wright is the following I obtained from LDS
Married William Gregson 12 Sep 1813. William was buried 23 Oct 1819 and Jenny later married Stephen Waring 7 April 1820. No mention of Jenny's parents.
Yes, I guess we are cousins of some kind

Thanks for that Bob. I already have Stephen Wareing , he is my ggg grandfathers brother. I was a Wareing before I married so I have a lot of them in my tree. Don't know much about the Wrights though.
