WorkhousesI know someone, or even 2, have asked for information on a Southport workhouse recently. And someone posted details about a web site relating to workhouses. But I can't find it. So I am starting a new post.
This site may be useful
www.workhouses.org.uk
Sorry if it's the same as the one someone has already posted
I put Southport into the search box and although there are a few references they are to people's birth places rather than a workhouse. Lots of workhouses in the area though - Ormskirk, Fylde, Wigan

CoincidenceIt's funny how that happens...one day nothing and the next workhouses are popping up all over the show.
Thanks for opening a thread for this Jane, it's a popular subject...

what a good site. I took a look at the Ormskirk workhouse. and was surprised to see that the workhouse committee had 3 members from Ormskirk and 2 from Northmeols. I looked at the list of inmates and found several from southport/Northmeols

Probably the nearest one for anyone living in Southport at the time.
I bet there are some really sad tales behind these names.
It was only a couple of weeks ago I discovered one of my Great Great Grandmother's, her daughter, son in law and their small child in a workhouse on the 1901 census. No idea how to find out more. Family tales were that great great grandfather was caught poaching, shot a man and spent time in gaol. No idea when though. On the previous census - 1891 - he was with one daughter and she was with a son. Now I wonder when i will find the time for a trip to Wolverhampton to search 10 years worth of newspapers

There are several Rimmers buried in St Cuthbert's who died in the Ormskirk Workhouse! It does seem sad that some of these people had families and yet died in 'foreign' parts
