This is particularly aimed at SeaCopRimmer who kindly offered help via another forum, but if anyone else has info I shall be happy to hear from you.
Alice Theresa Rimmer born 16 Oct 1883 at 87 Kew Rd d/o John and Annie - I'd like her baptism details, but I suspect she may have been brought up as a baptist (married in Baptist Church in Barrow and family rumour says her mother was the Baptist). Were they baptised as adults?
Her brother William born about 1885/6 lived Milton St & Boundary Rd, but I have nothing for him except where he appears on the 1891/1901 census
Agnes born 27th April 1888, died 15th June 1889. The people at Duke St Cemetery tell me she was buried on the 19th, but I'd like to know if there was a church service with a burial entry in a register.
Brother John Richard, born 10 April 1890, apparently married Mary Cropper (but when and what children did they have?). I know he was at 32 Shaftesbury Rd in 1937 when his mum died and his wife registered the death. I found him on electoral registers in Southport Library from 1936 to 1939/40 and in 1951 he was at 131 Bedford Rd.
Ernest was born 8 July 1895 at Boundary Rd. I have his death on 15th November 1918 (details from the Commonwealth Graves site ).
Their father (my 1xG g'father) was John born 18th Jan 1851 at Back Lane s/o William & Alice. I don't have a baptism for him either or a burial register entry. He was buried 25th Feb 1902 at Duke St Cemetery.
His wife Annie was buried in the same plot on 22nd Feb 1937.
The people at the cemetery were most helpful and gave me all the details of the people buried in the plot with John. I've still to find out how some of the people were connected to John.
I'd really like the baptism entries of the siblings and burial entries of those I've mentioned. Also the parish register entry for John and Annie's marriage which was 8th Jan 1883 at St Paul's Birkdale.
I like to have the baptism/marriage/burial register entries as well as the certs (where possible), census records and anything else I can find that adds to the individual's story. I am researching all my lines where I can, but just get the details of my ancestors and their siblings. I don't do all the siblings children and grandchildren. You have to stop somewhere!
Sorry to overwhelm you with information and I hope it makes sense. I have a whole Lever Arch folder with all my "wants" listed so I could go on for ever.
Regards Degan

Hi Degan
I think I must tell you that I only do 'simple' look-ups for people who are not members of either North Meols FHS or Rimmer FHS;  your query (above) is less than simple and would mean a visit to LRO Preston and a lot of time when there;  I will do what I can but cannot promise to spend a lot of time on this as I do have my own research and that of members of one or both the Society's mentioned.  I think the only way to find out if there is a 'church' service prior to a burial would be to search for a death notice in the Southport Visiter (another possibly protracted search).  As I say, I will do what I can but don't promise results

I used to work with a woman who was a Baptist and she told me that she only believed in "total" baptism. ie. total immersion in water - this rules out infant baptism in the traditional sense but they presumably kept records.

Hi SeaCopRimmer

Sorry, I think I misunderstood your kind offer. I thought that you had lots of information on the Rimmers and you were going to check my names against your existing records. I wouldn't expect or want anyone to do new research for me. Please do not worry about my posting I am quite happy to wait for my next trip to Preston/Southport. Thank you again for the offer, it was much appreciated.

To Bez

I think you are right about the adult baptisms. I just need to find the name of the Church and if they have records.

Degan

Hi Degan
I do have lots of information on Rimmers but more 'historical' than post-1837;  I am going to Preston on Friday and will have a quick look
Take care

That is where you start Dotty. After a while I found I hit a brick wall so moved sideways instead. Now I have in-laws, out-laws, every twig and stick investigated where I can.

However I haven't got all the baptisms. Some of the more recent ones - by that I mean after 1900 - are still in registers at churches because they are still in use. Not so many baptisms now to fill them I suppose.

I'd never thought of that...

Although I've been doing family history since 1991 I've always had to work and am a single parent so there was always a juggle with my time... one of these days I'll retire (or marry a rich bloke) and I can do it all day long...family history, that is!

To SeaCopRimmer

It's very kind of you to offer to add my queries to your list of 'things to do' in Preston, but please put me at the bottom of the pile, as I don't want to stop you from doing what you intended doing. I really enjoyed my short visit to LRO recently, apart from the cough and cold (isn't it awkward when you want to cough in a Record Office!). I also enjoyed the bus trip from Preston to Southport.

I was lucky enough to be offered early retirement from BT a couple of years ago and I tend to spend the afternoon or evening doing family history. At the moment I am transferring my documents (I don't use a FH Programme) from my old PC to a laptop and am reveiwing everything at the same time. It's taken me months so far and I'm not done yet.

Perhaps I am just greedy Dotty and it's not you that's lazy. I was hoping for a big lottery win to buy hundreds of BMD certs just on the off-chance that the Rimmers, Wrights etc etc were mine, but it's not likely to happen, especially as I've given up buying the tickets!

Regards Degan

Degan you can download a FH programme from the Internet for free. I think Dotty used PAF so she could explain that one.

All of us wish we had the money to buy all those certificates and the time & money to travel to all those places to follow the foot steps of our ancestors. None of mine come from these parts but I have been lucky enough to travel to some of the places they lived.

Yes, Jane is right I use PAF and it was free to download from lds.org
Baxtersp has used it in the past too.

Luckily, I have not had a wrong cert yet...but it will happen because it happens to everyone.

Maybe some of us could meet up one time you come over to Southport or we go over to Preston.  My new bus pass takes me to Preston FOC.

As you are moving your files around, have you backed up the systems just in case?

Well, I had a really frustrating day at Preston and didn't get nearly as much done as I would have hoped;  did get the following (for Degan) though:

08.01.1883
John Rimmer, 31, Widower, Labourer, Alma Road F.William Rimmer
married
Annie Humphreys, 25, Spinster, 12 Duke Street, F.Richard Humphreys

Hope it helps?

Thank you so much SeaCopRimmer for looking up the marriage of John and Annie, it was really kind, especially when you didn't manage to get everything done that you had intended.

My late sister, who started the research used Family Tree Maker and liked it, but I couldn't bring myself to try it after her death (daft I know, but there you are). I've been quite happy just to use Word, as I like the freedom of writing what I like and not being restricted to a prescribed format. Also I am a simple soul and not very adventurous when it comes to using computers. To be honest I think that now I've got so many names I can't bear to think about entering them on a programme. A year or so ago I did start a database that I thought might be useful, and I gave up as it was going to be a huge task. I think the answer would have been to start it when I began the research and just added gradually as I went along. Too late now.

I've got one of those memory sticks that I use to keep duplicate records. I needed my nephew to get me sorted with that bit of technology. I also take prints of every profile, which is why I have twelve bulging lever arch files. I wonder how many felled trees I've got on my conscious!

I live in Salisbury and have only been to Preston a couple of times, but I certainly need to go back again some time. We used to go to Southport when my sisters and I were children to visit a great uncle and aunt who lived in Moss Rd which they always said was Birkdale, but one of the directories I looked at in Southport Library said it was Halsall. Is/was Birkdale posher than Halsall? Not that uncle Sid's house was posh, it had one of those awful dry loos. I used to dread having to use it!

And on that fragrant note I think I ought to go.

Regards and thanks again for your time.
Degan

Is Birkdale posher than Halsall? It depends where in Birkdale. My Mum was brought up in Warwick Street and judging by the stories she told it was distinctly unposh.

I live off Moss Road and it is Halsall, council tax is paid to West Lancs, but the postcode is PR and post goes through Southport rather than Ormskirk and West Lancs always address post to us as
Birkdale,
Halsall,
Ormskirk,
Lancashire.

Turning off Guildford Road the first two houses are Stamford Road and then there is a sign saying you are in West Lancs and the road become Moss Road.
I have always thought it strange as Moss Road has quite a few houses/bungalows, then there is nothing except fields until you get to Shirdley Hill/Brown Edge?  and we are quite a distance to Halsall Church..
