Hi I am Dave from Doncaster I was born on Lord Street Southport, and I have just started researching my late mothers side of the family, she was Lilian Rimmer and her family moved to Michigan in about 1949 her dad was Albert Rimmer (1902)  Blowick and her mother was Doris Bailey (Rotherham) they lived at 28 Cemetery Road Southport. Alberts dad was Thomas Rimmer (1860) and his mam was Jane Sourbutts, I know Albert had a sister Anne Rimmer (1898-1971) who died in North Meols, but I have ben unable to trace his other siblings one being called Jack who used to live with them, I am also stuck with Jane Sourbutt with no information to help me, any info would be gratefully received.

Welcome to the forum donny

I have a feeling it is Seacop who might be able to help you more with Rimmers. Hopefully she will spot this soon

Had already seen Dave's plea on The Rimmer FHS forum so have sent him a reply - can't come up with much until I get into the Library - but will keep this forum posted of progress (as and when)

I have just found out the info on my family I was given from a family tree site member was wrong  I have deleted them all back to Thomas Rimmer and Jane Sourbutts, my grandad only had brothers and no sisters, so the sister Anne does not exist it was Fred, Richard, Albert (grandad) Jim, Thomas, Jack and William Rimmer who I believe was killed in the first world war? Cheers Donnydave.

You could check the CWGC to see if you can find war dead

http://www.cwgc.org/

If it's first war then there is someone on here who has the book 'Southport's Splendid hearts' This lists all those who were killed in the first war and were from Southport.

I'm just starting a similar project on World War 2.

No idea if you feel it worthwhile but for members of the society I am happy to do some free research in the local library

There are a few William Rimmers in the SSH. Most likely is this one:
RIMMER, WILLIAM
269793 Private
13th Battalion
King's Liverpool Regiment
Born: Birkdale
KIA: F&F 11-4-1918
Buried in Brown's Road Military Cemetery, Festubert, Pas de Calais

There's a short piece in the Visiter (25-2-1918) refers to his parents Mr & Mrs Thomas Rimmer of 75 Shaftesbury Rd Southport. He was 20 years old, and before enlisting employed by Mr Blundell, Farm House Birkdale

Would make his birth around 1897/8 - does that sound about right?
Brian

Thanks Brian that does sound promising the birth date is about what I had estimated and it gives me an address to work from. Cheers Dave.

This is mam and dad Lilian Rimmer and Dennis Watson I think the year before I was born 1947 at Southport, the car was a prop for photographs I believe cos they never drove a car.

And this was mam as a baby at Southport about 1924

And mam when she was in the land army at Southport about 1945

Mr & Mrs Thomas Rimmer of 75 Shaftesbury Rd Southport

Checked in the Street Directory for 1924 and it was a Thomas and Mary living at 75 Shaftesbury Avenue!   Am back in the Library today (manning a help desk for family history) so will check further to see if I can find the right Thomas!
The only Rimmer/Sourbutts marriage I've found so far is Thomas Rimmer married Ellen Ann Sourbutts, Ormskirk District, September Quarter 1886, 8b 1073.
On the 1901 Census they appear at 34 Larch Street
Thomas Rimmer (34), Ellen A (38), William (13), John (10), Thomas (8), James (5), Frederick (2).

I think you have found them I have Thomas born in 1860 that makes him 26 getting married and 35 in the 1901 census. my auntie in America must have there ages mixed up she had grandad Albert as the 3rd born but grandad was born 1902 so would not be there yet, and Richard was probably the youngest and born even later? And John must be Jack, I will now send for the marriage certificate, I am really grateful you have gone to so much trouble for me, its cost me money in credits and found nothing, you have cracked it with a visit to the library   Thank You.

I've only had a quick look on FreeBMD but can't see a marriage to fit. There is one for a Denis Bailey registered Rotherham but the woman on the same page are not Eliza Ann Herd.
