FEMALE MP'S

The first government to allow women to stand for parliament did so by accident in 1895 when the colony of South Australia tabled a women's suffrage bill. opponents of the bill reputedly added a clause allowing women to stand for parliament in the belief that no one would pass such an extreme measure and therefore the entire bill would be rejected. They were wrong - although the world's first female MP was not elected until 1907, in Finland.

POST-IT NOTES

The first Post-it note was the result of an accidental discovery made in 1970 by Spencer Silver, a US research chemist who was trying to create the strongest glue on the market. Instead he came up with a weak glue that was re-usable, left no residue and did not even damage paper fibres when stuck to a page. Silver could not think of a use for it until colleague Arthur Fry used the glue to stop markers in his hymn book falling out. Post-it notes were officially launched in 1981.

FOOTBALL

Football first appeared in ancient China, around 350 BC, in the form of Tsu Chu, or kick ball. In 12 century Britain football was played between entire villages, but during the 19th century the game evolved in public schools and universities into a more formal sport. The first record of an 11-aside match is at Eton College in 1841. The rules were not fully standardised until the formation of The Football Association in London in 1863. In 1872, the Wanderers beat the Royal Engineers 1-0 in the first FA Cup competition.

I had a Great Uncle who played profession football for Grimsby & Lincoln. I also have a cousin's son who plays now

COMPUTERS

The first programmable computer with a stored memory - built by Professor Freddie Williams and Tom Kilburn - was run at Manchester University in June 1948. Prior to that, Charles Babbage was considered the grandfather of computers, having designed the first one as early as 1835. Scientists believe that Babbage's Analytical Engine could have performed the same tasks as early electronic digital computers - but the inadequacies of Victorian manufacturing techniques meant that it was never built.

A Lancashire family living in Russia prior to the Revolution claim to have introduced the Russians to the game of football. The Russians were employed in a Lancashire Mill situated about 60 miles outside Moscow. There were many such mills at the time, built by the British with British looms. One of my childhood friends was the grand-daughter of the manager of this particular mill and her mother was actually born in Russia.

As a matter of interest, her grandfather wrote in his journal that the Russians had tried Rugby, but found it to be too rough. Inbetween the 2 world wars, her grandfather was invited back to Russia several times as a special "Football Emissary".
