I can't take credit for it all.... one of the leases (of the fishing stall) is outlined in Aughton's North Meols book, the 1811 lease in Southport and the leases of William's sons were found by Bernulf Llewelyn Hodge in the 1930s... I found the 1807 one for the farm.

Supplimental to Andrι's post (I got so excited about Ellen I didn't notice the Henry Hodge question).....

Henry Hodge of 1819 was baptised in St Cuthberts, son of Henry Hodges and Alice Wright. The elder Henry was son of Peter Hodges and Alice Ball. Peter Hodges was son of Henry Hodges (baptised William) and Anne Blundell.... and Peter's brother was William who married Betty... so Elizabeth Blundell and her husband, Henry Hodge, were 2nd cousins... sharing great grandparents Henry (William) and Anne.

Not having any connection to Hodge in my tree until recently, I have made contact with a relative  whose grandmother was my grandmother's sister and she married a Thomas Henry Hodge c1894 according to 1901 census was born Halsall, and I have been told that his mother was an Elizabeth Ball .

In it he is living with grandfather Thomas Hodge c1831 and Are these Hodge from Halsall/Scarisbrick the same line as mentioned by you Hodgepodge?

Whoops just reread what I wrote.  1901 - Thomas Hodge is c1831 would be Thomas Henry's grandfather, therefore have amended.

All the Hodges from the Southport area are descended from William & Dorothy who were baptising children in the early 1600s, I'll take a look tomorrow at the specific individuals, they should be in my tree somewhere

Thomas Hodge c1830/31, grandfather of Thomas Henry, was son of Tom & Ellen. Thomas was born on the farm in Birkdale and in 1901 was running the farm on Heathy Lane, Halsall (which his father had leased in the 1840s).

I had never been able to place Thomas Henry in the tree, as he lived with his grandfather in the only census, I hadn't ruled out the possibilityof him being an illegitimate son of one of Thomas' surviving daughters (Elizabeth or Ann)... perhaps it was Elizabeth and she later married a Ball?

I would be interested in any information that identifies him in the family, so that I can give him his rightful place on my tree.

Seeing the Hodge photograph on the other thread reminded me that a friend in Canada sent me her late husband's tree a few years ago and that included a Hodge line.

Thomas Wright, weaver, aged 20 of Shayhey (Chase Heys), son  of James Wright, shoemaker married 28th February 1852 Ann Hodge, weaver, aged 20 of Marshside, daughter of Hugh Hodge, weaver.

The witnesses were Peter Wright and Betty Hodge.

I think she would be thrilled to have some more information if anyone can connect with this line.

Thanks Steve - I might have known you'd come up with the goods.  I only researched part of this line myself because I was really looking at the Rimmer/Lloyd connection.

Ann Wright (daughter of Thomas Wright and Ann Hodge) married John Rimmer (pier tolltaker) in 1881 and their son Thomas Rimmer married Ethel Frances Lloyd, a daughter of John Lloyd, the tram manager in Manor Road in 1905- they emigrated to Canada.  That gravestone I recently sent you a picture of is just in front of the grave of Thomas and Ethel Frances' eldest son John Cuthbert Rimmer and you have that on your database.

At the time I did that research I didn't know that Joyce's database even existed.

I'll pass the link on to this page.

Thanks

Shadylady,

Yes, I am Fiona.

Thomas Henry Hodge was grandson of Thomas. I had never ascertained which of Thomas' children was his parent (illegitimate children often lived with grandparents, particularly before their mothers married, obviously). If he was son of Thomas, then his mother would've been Mary Martha Leatherbarrow.

The succession of the farm was as follows:

Thomas Hodge (married Ellen Marshall) established the farm in the 1840s. When he died in 1870, he passed it to his son, Thomas (1830) (married Jane Marshall). I assume Thomas inherited over his elder brothers because they were established in other professions in other areas.

This Thomas outlived his eldest son, John, and so passed the farm to his 2nd son, Thomas (1866)(married Mary Martha Leatherbarrow), at his death in 1912.

At his death (unsure of date) it was inherited by his son, James (1890), who held the farm until it was sold in 1927 I think.

It would be during Thomas Hodge & Jane Marshall's time that my great grandfather spent shrove Tuesdays at the farm.

I would like some certified information on Thomas Henry, as he is currently awaiting attachment to the tree because I was never able to determine who was his parent.

I would also love to know the exact location of the farm on Heathy Lane.

Prior to leasing the Heathy Lane farm, Thomas (known as Gred Tom) lived & worked on his uncle William Hodge's farm in what is now Birkdale Village, on the corner of Alma Rd & Liverpool Rd. He had likely been taking in by his uncle since his mother's death in 1803, and was certainly on the farm by 1810, when he was pressganged while out at market in Liverpool (escaping after a night in custody).

Tom was born in 1794 to John Hodge & Mary Wright, his father being drowned on a fishing trip within months of Tom's birth. Tom's uncle, William Hodge, did rather well for himself, holding a fishing stall in Birkdale and then leasing the farm adjoining the Birkdale Mill in 1807. William only briefly lived in Birkdale himself (one child born there in 1795), spending most of his life in South Haws (as did his children), he just leased the land and Tom ran the farm for him. William and his sons leased various lands and properties in South Haws and they worked primarily as fishermen.

There is a great deal of confusion from the baptism records regarding William and his wife, Betty. There is no marriage listed for them in North Meols, but they start having children in 1778, and are certainly still breeding in 1795 (the first & only child born in Birkdale). In 1796, another couple of the names marry: William Hodge & Betty Andow, and it is generally thought that all children born to William & Betty after this date (in South Haws) belowng to this 2nd couple, including Richard in 1797.

Richard was the father of Charles Hodge, Coxwain of the Eliza Fernley lifeboat.

However, on the lease of 1807 for the birkdale farm, 3 sons are listed, the youngest being Richard who matches closely in age to the one in the records of 1797. Additonally, in red pencil on the lease is the comment that the lease expired on 12th Nov 1869 on the death of Richard, which is the death date of Charles' father.

Now we have proven that one of the children born after the 2nd couple's marriage belonged to the first, we cannot be sure that others didn't either... or even that at least one of the parents were one & the same person. We have various options:

1. William and Betty lived together from 1778, but did not actually marry until 1796. Main problem being that this means a very long period of childbearing for one women.

2. Most, if not all, of the children after Richard WERE to a different couple.

3. Betty #1 died and William remarried another Betty, with whom he had more children.

Sadly, the faulty information about Richard Hodge is now in print (not least through Rev Bulpit), and can never entirely be erased. So general theory placed Charles Hodge in the wrong branch of the Hodge family.

So, Shadylady, your line is:

Thomas Henry, 1895, Halsall
Thomas? 1866, Halsall
Thomas 1830, Birkdale
Thomas, 1794, North Meols
John, 1762, North Meols
William (known as Henry) 1720, North Meols
William 1698, North Meols
Thomas 1668, North Meols
William 1640, Roe Lane, Churchtown
Thomas c1608, Roe Lane, Churchtown
William c1580
