Do you know if Nathan's wife was called Lydia?
Brian

Her name was Alice Prescott and they were married at St Stephens, Banks, on 4 Sept 1907. Obviously buying the certificate ought to clear up the parentage question, but I'm trying to keep costs down - especially when there is a distinct possibility of ordering the wrong one!

Thanks, Mary

That's ok - it just rules out the 1864 Nathan who married his own 1st cousin Lydia Caunce in 1900. He was probably too old anyway

Mary,
Looking at Nathan Rimmer's on Free BMD from 1875-1880, birth and deaths born Lancashire

Deaths Sept 1876
RIMMER  Nathan  4  Ormskirk  8b 478
RIMMER  Nathan  28  Ormskirk  8b 489

Births Mar 1877
RIMMER  Nathan     Salford  8d 80

Births Jun 1877
RIMMER  Nathaniel     Ormskirk  8b 779

Births Sep 1879
Rimmer  Nathan     Ormskirk  8b 799

Births Jun 1880
RIMMER  Nathan     Ormskirk  8b 832

Deaths Sep 1880
RIMMER  Nathan  0  Ormskirk  8b 517
RIMMER  Nathan  0  Ormskirk  8b 617

If the two deaths Sept 1880 are the ones born Sept 1879 and June 1880, then that only leaves Nathaniel born 1877 Ormskirk district or Nathan born Salford area.

Free BMD states it is fully transcribed 1870-1889, births and deaths

Coincidentally Mary has contacted me via my Tribalpages tree and I've just sent her the same by e-mail. Could he have been registered as Nathaniel then reverted to Nathan? The 1881 census suggests parents may have been Edward & Margaret Rimmer, with Margaret possibly being a Barton (1868 marriages Spt Qtr)

Many thanks to Yvonne and to Brian for their detective work on my behalf. You've given us a lot to think about. I'l let you know when we have a definitive answer to this puzzle - unless of course you or someone else enlightens us first!

Thank you again, and happy Christmas to all.

Mary
