Hi,Can anyone please help? I am trying to find any information on a Nathan Rimmer .I have little or no information about him , only that he served with the south lancashire regiment in the first world war.He died 26/10/1918 in France/Belgium.He was my father-in-law's grandfather.
Any information would be gratefully received

Have you tried the Common Wealth war grave site?

http://www.cwgc.org/debt_of_honour.asp?menuid=14

Or the 1901 census - the index is free to search.

http://www.1901census.nationalarchives.gov.uk/

There is a Rimmer expert on here who may answer later. Oh and there is also the Rimmer FHS

http://www.rimmerreviewonline.com/

So a few places to start

Family history is always best started with what you know and working backwards. So Father in law's marriage certificate would give his father's name. Once you know who his father was you then need his birth certificate for his parents' names. A marriage certificate would give names and ages (hopefully). Once back to 1901 then as I say the index is searchable online.

If you can find out a little more then we may be able to help further but hopefully I have given you something to go on for now

"Southport's Splendid Hearts" is a splendid book - but is a list of Southport-born men and therefore not just men who lived or enlisted in Southport - which creates slight difficulties (I know - my great-uncle Matthew Howard is listed and he enlisted in Canada and there is no mention of him on the 1901 England Census, so he was very difficult to find).

Whilst in Southport Reference Library this morning I asked if they would check for Nathan Rimmer on the Soldiers Died in the Great War CD-rom? They came up with the following:

Regiment, Corps, etc: Prince of Wales's Volunteers (South Lancashire Regiment)
Battalion/etc. : 1/5th Battalion
Surname : RIMMER
Christian Name(s) : Nathan Initials : N
Born : Southport, Lancs
Enlisted : Leigh, Lancs
Residence : ........
Died Date : 26/10/18 Rank : Private
Died How : Killed in action
Theatre of War : France & Flanders Number : 15936

So it would appear that Nathan Rimmer may have lived in Leigh and not in Southport when he enlisted; it is odd that he's not in the "Splendid Hearts" book though?
I feel a trip to The National Archives at Kew might throw some light on this if by any chance his Service Record has survived?

Can I sort out the confusion in my head

Seacop - I thought he was in the book? Unsworth has written it out

Or are you saying there are 2 Natham Rimmers, similar age, both died in the first war?

Very possible with that surname.

As for enlisting in Leigh. One of my great uncles from Lincoln who died in the first war - said he enlisted in Leeds. He had been in the army for about 12 years before the war started so actually didn't really enlist. He was based in Leeds at the time.

Hopefully Bigalb will be back soon. Would like to hear his views.

Unsworth has the wrong Nathan Rimmer; we know from Bigalb's post that his Nathan died in Belgium in 1918!
My great-uncle Matthew Howard is in the "Splendid Hearts" book and he enlisted in Canada - which is why I thought that Bigalb should search further afield - just in case he was working in Leigh or the family had moved!

took another look on the 1901 census there are a few Rimmer's living in Wigan. if my memory serves me correct Leigh is only about 10 miles from wigan. which would account for his enlisting in leigh. could one of these be the guy you are looking for?

Appreciate the amount of work here, Unsworth, but unless we have an approximate age for Bigalb's Nathan Rimmer then we're all working in the dark! It's not likely that anybody born before c.1870 would have been a soldier in the Great War
Where are you Bigalb - we need some answers :?:

Hi everybody, sorry for not replying sooner. My father-in-law's dad was David Prescott born in Leigh 29/6/1905.We don't think that Nathan was married to David's mum and think that Prescott may be her surname.
I can only apologise for the vagueness of this enquiry but we have no birth or marriage certs for reference.
Thanks once again for all your help.Alan

Hi Bigalb
The plot thickens! At least we now have a 'Leigh' connection?

Take care

Well, I can't believe I've missed all the excitement...

How come, if I've been out of commission, I haven't got all these posts listed as ones since I was last on the forum?

It will teach me to be off-colour!

I have a Nathan Rimmer born c 1822 in my Howard line.
He married Elizabeth Howard 28 Aug 1848.

By 1871 Nathan & family are living in Wigan.
There is a young Nathan age 7 then.

Elizabeth appears to have died by 1891 as Nathan Snr is with wife Eliza and have found a Wigan death for a Elizabeth Rimmer in Wigan, but not confirmed that it is her.

Nathan Jnr is with father on 1891 census age 27
RG12/3056 fFolio 74 Page 5

This may or may not help to narrow down your Nathan.
