Searching for baptism of Job RIGBY born about 1820 (IGI) in Wigan.
Died and buried in Preston 1899.
1st marriage June 1845 to Mary BIRCHALL.
2nd marriage March 1860 to Catherine YATES.
Daughter named Margaret Elizabeth.
Son William George.
Son Job.
Father William - farmer, gentleman and possibly coal proprietor.
No mother’s name.
Possibly had a brother George born in Ince about 1818 (with children born in Southport).
Additional information:
He was listed as John at his second marriage in 1860.
Was living in Pemberton, Wigan in 1851
He was listed as Joseph on 1881 census.
He was living in Preston with his Son William George when he died.
I have it on good authority that he is related to Southport Rigbys.

Another bit of info Job Rigby and family...
"You may remember we met at the Astley Hall exhibition in August and you very
kindly put my search for the baptism of JOB RIGBY (born about 1820) on your
forum. There was no feedback from any of your members so evidently nobody
had found anything, which didn't surprise me because I had no reason to
suppose he had any connection with North Meols.
But now I have found a couple of intriguing connections with Southport.
First, I got an amazing breakthrough a couple of weeks ago, when I
discovered that Job almost certainly had a brother called GEORGE RIGBY (born
1818). Trouble is, I can't find a baptism for him either!
However, I discovered George got married to a Wigan girl in1841, had two
children in Wigan and then, surprisingly, two more in Southport. I bought
both birth certificates, so I know now that George lived in Southport at
least between November 1844 and October 1848. I don't know where in
Southport, because the lazy registrar has simply written 'Southport' on both
certificates.
I also discovered another fact about Job. He lived in Southport for a while
too, and appears in the 1891 census in Boundary St, as a boarder. I wonder
whether this is significant. Could he have returned to the roots of his
original family (he seems to have become a loner since his two wives and
most of his children died).
So the reason I am contacting you again is because I am trying to find out
whether Job's and George's family had any land or property around Southport.
During his stay in Southport, George was a 'yeoman' (which I understand is
somebody who has freehold land) and Job often stated that he was a farmer or
cattle dealer. Their father was WILLIAM RIGBY, who was stated to be a
'farmer' in 1845 when Job got married. So the question is, was George
staying with his father in Southport? If so, where?
The birth certificates don't give an address, so do you happen to know
whether there are any polling lists or taxation lists or any other source
that might point to the address where George was living between, say, 1844
and 1848? If there are, do you know where they are kept and how I can access them?"_________________ Family History is moo-sic to my ears! |

I can only think of looking in a local directory of the time - many have name lists at the back.
There are Burgess rolls (electoral registers) too
Both are to be found in Southport reference library and most of the staff are very helpful and will find things for you.

I contacted Gerald and asked for an update on Job Rigby and he kindly sent me this:
"Nice that you remembered Job. As a matter of fact, I've had a big breakthrough. A few weeks ago I got some of the LDS films for All Saints, Wigan. I found a Job Nuttle (Nuttall) around the date I'd expected to find Job Rigby. I'd suspected for years that his mother's name was Nuttle and I'd wondered (also for a long time) whether he might have been listed accidentally in the BTs under the mother's name. However, it clearly read 'Nuttle' in the baptism record.
To cut a long story short, by pure chance I found a correction at the bottom of the page. It said that the entry for Job Nuttle should have read Job Rigby. The correction had been made 25 years later! It was dated about 3 days before Job got married, so obviously somebody had been looking up his baptism.
Not only that, I found a sibling, under William Nuttall. At the bottom of the page was a correction, again made 25 years later. It should have read George Rigby. Unbelievable! They'd got both Christian name and Surname wrong in a Christening! The witness in both cases (who signed the correction) was an Edward Rigby, who must have been there at the original Christenings. I still don't know who he is, but he's probably Job's uncle (his father's brother).
So the mystery is solved. And I know Job's parents are William and Margaret (Peggy). Of course, there are literally hundreds of William Rigbys around Wigan, so it will be a long time before I pin down the right one. But there is still a Southport connection. Job's brother (George, above) went to live for a few years in Southport. Why, I don't know. And Job also lived for a while in Southport in 1891. Why? They possibly inherited land there from a George Nuttall (Peggy's father, a wealthy coal merchant). Unfortunately the birth certs of George's children (born in Southport) give the address simply as Southport. It's all very intriguing.
By the way, I've been on the nmfh website a few times to read the forum entries, but it's only recently I've found the New Topic buttons, so I may be able to contribute something now.
Again, many thanks for your help. Best Regards
Gerald"
I do like a happy ending!

Good that he found something after all this time. I often find if you put an ancestor away for a while when you bring them out again something else suddenly drops into place.
Very odd that both children were baptised under the Mother's name.
I would guess it was work that brought them to Southport - and a lot of birth certificates only have the place and not an address.
