Hugh Gregson, born 29 Nov 1831, was the son of James Gregson, b1792, and Rachel Baxendale.  Hugh was baptised at Churchtown Independent Church on 17 Dec 1831.

Does anyone have any further information about him, marriage, children, death?

Have you any census information for him? I'm sure there are a few people can look him up for you.

I have access to the censuses and have the following:

1841 Marshside
James Gregson, 50, farmer
Ellen, 25
William, 20
Ann, 15
Hugh, 10

James', wife Rebecca, died in 1838

James remarried on 14 Nov 1850 to Martha Hilson, of Bootle, in Liverpool, both described as farmers.

1851 Marshside.
James, Head, 59, farmer of 76 acres, employing 4 men & 1 boy
Martha, wife, 50, farmer
Hugh, son, 19, unmarried, House Carpenter
James Hunt, 25, son-in-law
Ann Hunt, 26 daughter
Richard Hunt, 3 mo, grandson

James died in 1855 and in 1861 & 1871 Martha continued to operate the farm with no family members living with her.

I have found a Hugh Gregson b abt 1829, a wheelwright, wife name Ann, which I need to follow up to see if there is a possible connection.

I have been looking at later census to see what I can find.

In 1861 this one certainly seems likely. He is the only Hugh Gregson in Lancashire who fits age/birth year.

Sorry I can't make out the street

1861 census - West Derby, Liverpool
Head - Hugh Gregson - 26 Joiner born Southport
Wife - Mary Ann - 27 born Castlemar Northwich

There is also one with Margaret born about 1832 but it says son.
This is Crossens, Southport.
Margaret is aged 61 a widow and son Hugh is down as a 29 year old widower - joiner born North Meols

So his occupation would fit with carpenter in 1851

1871 census is a little different. I can see the Hugh in Liverpool born about 1834

In Southport itself there is Hugh born about 1856 - son of Hugh & Martha but that age is too far out.

There are no other Hugh Gregson's listed who fit at all.

I have searched FreeBMD for possible marriages -

June quarter 1855 to either Emma Cork or Ann Sutton
There are no deaths between 1851-61 for an Emma Gregson but quite a few for an Ann.
So this would fit with Hugh being married and widowed between the census.

Then there is a marriage Sept quarter 1860 to a Mary Ann Miller in Liverpool. This fits the other Hugh

Not sure if any of that helps or hinders..................

[There is also one with Margaret born about 1832 but it says son.]

This son Hugh, was bapisted 25 Sep 1831, and is the son of Robert Gregson and Elizabeth/Margaret Wareing.  My post of 27 Dec 07 on the topic Wife of Robert Gregson b 1796 refers to this.

I believe this Hugh is the one whose first marriage was to Ann Sutton in 1855, she died 1858.  This ties in with the reference to Hugh, Widower, in the 1861 census.  Hugh & Ann had a son also named Hugh (just to confuse his descendants

I will follow up on the West Derby connection.  Thanks for the lead

Bob
