When in Southport Reference Library yesterday I was talking with Matthew (Senior Local History Librarian) about WW1 information somebody had asked me to look up; he showed me two sets of books which he and Andrew Farthing had put together. They are full of all war time information extracted from the Southport newspapers of the times and consist of five volumes for each 'War' and are well-indexed. Not only did I find the information I was looking for I also saw, looking straight at me, a picture of my Uncle Jimmy in his army uniform - what a handsome man he was (not at all as I remembered him) Wink

Maybe we should have a thread for things to be found in Southport reference library - lots of hidden delights people don't know about I'm sure.

I shall get Admin onto it.......................

I know I'm just a pest but my great grandpa died in WWI 1915 at Festuberg, he had an obituary in the southport paper. next time anyone goes in could they look him up for me? I have no pics of him so if there is one with the obituary I would love it if you could copy it and send it to me. his name was William Lee.

Seacop,

Because I live across the pond, I don't have access to the library.  Are there any sites that I could access that would give me archive material from local newspapers?  I am a member if that helps.  I can't find a death date or location for Henry Green, born Ainsdale 1852.  He was married to Margaret Lloyd.  I'm also looking for clues to my grandmother's disappearance, Clara Green,in October 1911.  I thought I might find some reference to a missing person because she left her 7 year old son behind in Southport/Birkdale area.

Regards,
Kathleen Aiello

Unfortunately I don't believe there is a site for local (Southport) newspapers but Jane and myself could have a look for you when we go into the Library - I think our next visit will be next Tuesday.  Because you are a member we don't mind helping - we do get inundated at times with requests for help, but members go straight to the top of the list Wink

Thank you seacop...you are a real star!

As well as requests on the forum we get loads of emails and PMs from people asking, nay begging, for help but few of them consider taking out membership of the society.  If it wasn't for the fees paid we couldn't afford the website and then there would be no forum.  As seacop says it's hard but we have to prioritise...

kaiello I always offer to look for things in the old newspapers for members.

Just a few points worth mentioning though

1 - For death/funeral notices notices I need a date. A quarter means a lot of papers to search (there used to be 3 Visters a week)

2 - The best time for these was the 20th century. Most of the earlier papers consist of news - local and national.

I shall add it to my list for Tuesday - the usual library day for me & Seacop but I've only just come home from holiday so I bet she missed me this week Smile
