The Lancashire Online Parish Clerk website shows baptisms from the Independent Chapel in the Parish of North Meols. Where was this?

I'm not too sure and a search using Google doesn't help. In fact at least 2 were known as this - Chapel Street Independent Chapel & Lord Street Independent Chapel.

Can you email the site to find out?

I bet Seacop or Bez will know - it may be a while until either of them can reply though

Thanks Jane. Unfortunately there are no contact details on Lancashire OPC, I suppose because they would get so many queries.

Am at my sister's catching up while I am offline at home.

This is the baptism register for the Eastbank Lane Independent Chapel.  The original is in the National Archives or the NMFHS sell a transcription.

Eastbank Lane Independent Chapel was enlarged several times and then demolished in 1866 and rebuilt as Chapel Street Congregational Church.  This was a much larger building and faced into Chapel Street (which is named after the Church) which meant that a number of graves had to be removed to the newly opened Duke Street Cemetery.

Chapel Street Congregational Church closed in 1963 and the graveyard was cleared inbetween January and April 1965.  All but 13 of the remaining bodies were cremated.

Would just like to add that this was technically in South Hawes which went on to become South Port - but it was in the Parish of North Meols.  The original Independent Dissenting Chapel in North Meols was (and still is) in Churchtown.  Its first minister was the Rev. George Greatbatch who also preached in other villages - including South Hawes/South Port.  as the new town grew, Greatbatch's congregation increased and he felt the call to preach there full-time.  The first chapel building in Southport was a wooden shack with a leaky roof - when it rained the congregation had to sit with their umbrellas up.
