Instead of trying to recall the names of obscure singers I should really try and trace Mary Ellen Rimmer c1856.
Would a Birkdale family trek over to St Cuthbert's for a christening in 1856 or was there a C of E church in Birkdale at that time? If so do records exist?

I have found families walked miles to use a church - My husband's lot lived in Scarisbrick but always used Ormskirk church.
Ah ah though I have been passed a list of churches and the date they opened so I shall add it to the forum. Watch this space..............

| St James, Birkdale was only consecrated in 1857, but cannot find anything about St Peter's and St John's.

Churchgate is the old Kirkgate and did run from Birkdale straight to St Cuthbert's - hence the name. Up to 1807 St Cuthbert's was the only church in the whole of North Meols. The Dissenting Chapel, North Meols was formed in 1807 (now the URC on Botanic Road) and the next church was Christ Church (1821), in the newly formed township of Southport - so that was nearer for Birkdale folk than going to St Cuthbert's.
On the 1839 Tithe map Churchgate is shown as exiting onto what is now Manor Road (at that time it was Marshside Lane) where the (former) post office stands, an area once known as Cock's Clod (Sandyken will correct me on that one if I'm wrong) whereas now it exits onto Botanic Road.
