Oh dear. Maybe he wasn't sure

but the marriage is May 1851 so have you found the likely culprit on the census? At least you have a father's name - but with the surname Rimmer there might be a few possible families with the same first names.............

Think this is him, mostly because he is a sawyer on 1851 census

Richard Rimmer
Age: 20
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1831
Relation: Son
Father's Name: William
Mother's Name: Ann
Gender: Male
Where born: North Meols, Lancashire, England
HO107; Piece: 2196; Folio: 591; Page: 45;

Must have had his 21st before he married!!

Cannot find his baptism at St Cuthbert's though.
The only one to a William and Ann was born 1832 and he is on 1851 with his parents William and Ann
HO107; Piece: 2196; Folio: 512; Page: 37

and after all that I cannot link Ann into my Howard tree

Um so he was called Richard but could only write Robert..............

Our ancestors do lead us a merry dance at times.

One day that Ann just may click into place.

Just been looking for a baptism for Ann at St Cuthbert's , cannot find one for her either with a father John.

Wonder whether this is her
1841 census ED 8 Church Town
John Howard male 30 Weaver born in county
Mary Howard female 30 born in county
Ann Howard female 9 born in county
Matthew Howard male born in county
Margaret Howard female 2 born in county
Sarah Howard female 3 months born in county

Doesn't Seacop have a Matthew Howard or was it Matthew Rimmer

Update
No it was Matthew Howard but parents Henry and Isabella

My Matthew Howard was the son of Henry and Isabella (nee Rimmer);  there was however another Matthew Howard from Churchtown!

People are only human...now that should be written down!

A simple explanation could be that the person who wrote the copy certificate made a mistake.

Have you thought of writing and asking the GRO to confirm the names on the cert?

It sounds like a plan to me...

I would have thought that  he was Robert and the minister wrote Richard by mistake, but you would really need to see the original to be certain - on the grounds that he would have signed his own name accurately.

...and that explanation is a good one, too.

I think your idea is better than mine, Bez.

Good hunting, Yvonne.

have you any idea how many times I've looked for a Jack only to discover his given name was John, or Dick thinking the name was Richard....wrong...his name was Robert. I have an Elijah whose real name was William Elijah.... his dad was william. you just never know....mum's and others just loved nick names...sometimes it helps sort out the Rimmers but other times its confusing.

Well!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If John Howard is the son of Mathew and Pegy nee Wright my FTM makes out that John is my 7th cousin 5 times removed.

I don't think I will rush to sort this one out
