I have received an email asking for help. This member doesn't use the forum - some people don't know how or just don't want to

Anyway maybe some others might have advise
I quote -

My g.grandmother was an Elizabeth Sherrington.  The family is in the
various censuses. She was born in Southport 17 May, 1860 - and I do
have her birth certificate and she is in the 1861 census.  I can,
however, find no record of her baptism. Her parents are Wm Sherrington
( Painter) and Emma, formerly Lowe.

I recently sent for the St Marie on the Sands baptism records, as the
parents' wedding certificate shows that Wm Sherrington, painter, son
of Thomas Sherrington, labourer, married Emma Lowe, spinster, on 28
March 1857 at St Marie on the Sands.

The problems now arise. All the Sherringtons (including Emma Lowe who
married into the family) were connected to St Marie's. Emma was
baptised as a 20 year old, a year before she married (unless the
dates have been misread, somewhere, in which case it would be at the
time of her marriage.  The marriage is 28 March 1851, the baptism 30
March 1850.

I have a long list of baptisms, but not one for Elizabeth
Sherrington, and there is no mention of any Sherringtons being
baptised in the church after 1855.

There  is, however, a Wm Sherrington and an Emma nee Ratcliffe with a
child  baptised  in  1857.  It can't be a second wife, as Elizabeth's
birth  certificate  shows her as an Emma formerly Lowe. A William and
Emma  Ratcliffe have another son baptised at St Marie's in 1854 - but
the records indicate he was the twin of Frederick, who died 26 August
1854,  aged  14  months, and the S. Visiter notice for the year lists
him as the son of Wm Sherrington, painter.

I cannot establish a marriage for a Wm Sherrington and an Emma
Ratcliffe.  Is it possible the priest of the day got some things
wrong?  Or was Emma Lowe also possibly a Ratcliffe (a thought?) as
the surname of her father is not given on her marriage certificate
and I don't know who he is.  Could a priest have insisted she name
her father?  BDMs etc offer no help.

She is also having problems locating burial places. There are only 3 Sherrington's buried at Holy Trinity.

I wonder if either the person filling in the register made an error writing Emma's surname and maybe a look at the original would help. Maybe he wrote the same one twice from an entry above
Or maybe the error was made when they were transcribed - something that is easily done

But I can't really offer more help. Can anyone else?

There are two marriage dates quoted in the enquiry:
Wm Sherrington married Emma Lowe - 28th March 1857, and
The marriage (Sherrington/Lowe) is 28 March 1851

Can we assume that the correct year would be 1851?

the only thing I can suggest is to get the marriage cert to check age of bride and groom. this will let her know if these are 2 separate families or some misreading etc.

All I could find was the marriage in 1851 so I think it was a typing error.

I think she mentioned having problems getting the certificate too. Shall find that part of the email and quote here.
The member lives in New Zealand so not as easy for her as us to get some things

I tried to get Elizabeth's marriage certificate but there are
problems over the BDM entry - and therefore problems over the
certificate. I was told the names were wrong.  This means they
looked at her husband's name, which doesn't show who he married. The
wife's name however lists her husband, so I'll have to spend another
three pounds and ask for the certificate in her name.  As presumably
this will also cause a problem I'll have to phone them.

It might have helped with a few more dates etc....I have asked her for these so shall await another email

Thanks for the replies so far. I knew a few of you would try and help

That's an interesting little item...

I can see I've been very lucky with my FH.
