|
|
We all (may) know of the meeting of Old Duke Sutton and Dr Barton in 1792 and the tentative suggestion of being in South Port. Certainly the name appeared in official records within a very few years but when did Marshsiders, Crossensers and particularly the Churchtownees around and about the Mother Church start saying "I'm from Southport"?
And when did it actually become official?
And why didn't North Meols continue to be a district like the others above?
Any ideas?

You're probably right...I'm often hearing "I live in Churchtown" when they don't but I've not heard anyone for years claiming to be from Blowick.
My Rigby's came from High Park and Blowick.

My Uncle Tom lived in Blowick and made no bones about it. "The Blowick" was his local. Mind you the Thatch and Thistle (on the same site) is a big improvement as the Blowick was one of the old "spit and sawdust" types of pub.
An old Sunday School register at Churchtown URC (commenced in 1845) gives reasons for the scholars leaving, including "went to live in Southport".
Before Hesketh Park was constructed (circa 1864) that area was just sandhills, so Churchtown was still a separate place.
