My grandmother was Mary Rimmer, nee Parker (1907-2003). She was born in Runcorn, Cheshire, the youngest of 13 children, but she spent most of her life in Birkdale,

Mary came to Southport when she was fifteen to take up employment as a maid in one of the very big houses in Birkdale.

As she explained to me, she didn't make a very good first impression:
“The family was away on holiday and the housekeeper taught me how to wait at table – serve from the right, collect from the left. The first evening when I was waiting at table, I felt like the “bees knees” – hair in plaits, clean pinafore and a lace cap. As  I approached the table carrying a large leg of mutton on a platter that I was to put in front of the master to serve, the son – Basil – jumped up and shouted “Hello Mary” – this made me jump and the meat finished up on the master’s lap. The mistress pursed her lips but said nothing while the master put his napkin to his face and said “I don’t think I can carve it there” and picked it up and put it back on the platter. I was sure I would lose my job but the mistress never referred to the incident.”

The most positive thing to come out of not losing her job was that she met and married my grandfather - Harry Rimmer (1907-1976) who was a gardener working for the same family.

My grandmother,Jane Frances Hurst nee Caulfield was born in Everton in 1917 close to St Francis Xaviers, our ancestors coming to Liverpool from Ireland at the time of the potato famine. The family moved to Southport in the 1920s where she married my grandfather Thomas Hurst at St Peters in Birkdale. Her brother Luke married Thomas' sister Kathleen around the same time.Thomas' mother Annie Hurst nee Hodson was descended from the Hodsons from around Little London,a family of Bricklayers, who alledgedly built Hodson Street in Southport.
