I have for sale a painting of St Paul's Church, off Duke Street, by Southport artist Mabel Peck, nee Hobart (1910-2008). It is a watercolour, 240x345mm approximately, on heavy card, signed and dated M Hobart 1967. Overall colour is a little warmer than this digital image suggests. It is unframed and unmounted. There is a stick-on label on the reverse with her name and address and the name of the painting. It is in good condition with no signs of adhesive tape or other damage to either surface. The price is £50.

Mabel Peck was my grandmother. She went to school in Southport and art college in Liverpool. She painted all her life: after her death we found hundreds of paintings in her studio, dating from 1928 to 2000. I have decided that there is not much point in leaving them, unseen, in two big suitcases, so I am organising an exhibition. As I live in Pembrokeshire, the exhibition will be here, and the proceeds from it will benefit a local charity.

I am offering the painting via this forum because it is so specific to Southport, and because I found a couple of references to it in your archives. The church was demolished in the eighties (??) and I can find no pictures of it on the Internet; I found this forum while searching for a photo to confirm that the label is right. A few people were talking about the church and their connection to it.

Christmas is coming, folks! If you are potentially interested, get in touch, and I will gladly send a bigger and better image.

Hello PeterJohn

Your surname wouldn't begin with a W would it?

I wonder if you may know of a local artist from the 1860s with the initials E.B.?  My neighbour was showing me yesterday four paintings which he has of Southport, they are initialled on the bottom right hand corner with the year.

Regards

Dotty

Hello Dotty,

no, sorry to disappoint, you're barking up the wrong tree with the name. And sorry again, I know almost nothing of local artists, whether from the 1860s or any other time.

While I'm here, here's Croston church in 1928. Nice, isn't it?

PJ

Oh, well it was worth asking.  Thanks for your swift response.

The Croston picture is beautiful.  One of our committee loves the village of Croston...I like it myself.

Oh, you like that? Glad to hear it. Here's a look inside the church, also 1928:

So if your committee member, or one of his/her family, is looking for a Christmas present, point her/him this way. Or is this, from 1953, more Christmassy:

Choices, choices...

Croston is one of my favourite villages...except for the traffic that thunders through. But I come from Lincoln and my family history is all over the place except Lancashire

This is a message for Peter John.  I would be interested in the paintings of Croston, if  you still have them.
