Am fairly new to family history and just trying to confirm that my grandfather Samuel Richard Dickinson (known as Dick) parents are. I believe his father died when he was quite young and his mother had to raise the children and work.  He had 2 sisters that I knew, once called Amy and the other called Beth. Found it a bit confusing looking at the census reports but I believe that his mother is Helena Kate Kennedy. Would like assistance to check this. S R Dickinson's date of birth 09/03/1897 and he married Elizabeth Eccles in July 1923 my grandmothers birthday. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Welcome to our forum.

The only way to check for definite is to send for his birth certificate which would give the names of his parents.

I have found his birth registered - June quarter 1897 Prescot

1911 census - 11 Nutmeg Street Leigh
Head is Samuel Dickinson aged 46. A waterman born Leigh
His wife is Sarah aged 44.

It says they have been married 23 years so that should be fairly easy to find in the indexes
Do you have access to our online birth, marriages, deaths? If not someone might look them up if you ask

There are 2 children. Samuel aged 12 and sister Lucy aged 20

It does say they had 6 children in total, 4 are living and 2 have died.

Hope that helps a little but if you need any other help please just ask

thanks Jody, you are correct with the marriage, I happen to have a the certificate, only child (my mother) and only grandchild (me).  Being the only child makes things quite difficult as does living half way round the world. When looking at the census is where I get a bit confused. In 1911 SR Dickinson's mother is Kate, Widow born in 1865 in Chester. In 1901 same address, Old Mill Lane, listed as Eleaonar born 1866 in chester, am I to assume the same person. I can reconcile the marriage cert to the 1901 census and I also remember Amy and Elsie as Beth.

thanks Jane for your welcome, I think I will send off for SR Dickinsons birth certificate as you suggested.  Looking forward to learning more about my UK family history.  All seem to come from Formby or Southport. Some familiar names, Eccles, Rimmer, Dickinson, Hodson, Williams, Aindow.  Once again thanks for your information.

Have you thought about joining the society? We have members from all over the World, not all use or have a computer and many don't use the forum...so you might find someone that connects or can help.

Full details are on our web site.....http://www.nmfhssouthport.co.uk/

Now that the Southport Visiter newspapers are back in the local library I can also offer a free look up for society members, although there is a charge for photocoping & postage.

Hello Carole

Welcome to the forum.  I've been quiet for the last 6 weeks because of a family bereavement...my cousin who was like me, mad about family history.

I'm glad you took Jane's advice and joined the society.  Looking forward to seeing your searches come to fruition.

TTFN
