My grandfather Owen O'Malley went to England from Upper Kilsallagh, Mayo, Ireland, probably between 1871, where I don't find him in the census, and 1881 in Southport, where I find him married to Margaret Joyce, also from Mayo. They married at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Southport  and had their first son Michael there in 1881. He worked as a railway porter according to the census. They soon immigrated to Chicago from there. In the research that came into my hands, I am told that both O'Malley and Joyce families lived at that time at 32 Cemetery Road. But I cannot find any O'Malley's or Joyce's there. I'm sure work brought these families to England. I have combed the census for this enumeration district but can find no Joyce's or O'Malley's.  Of course, the families referred to could have other names...anyway, I am looking for relatives.  Any thoughts?  Many thanks for any help and allowing me to join this forum.

Could they have been staying with a person or family (friend or relative) of another name who resided at that address?  I have found relatives at a different location because on the day of the census they were not at home but visiting a friend or relative and so were named at that location.

I have thought the same thing.  If so, I am stuck, because I don't know any other names.  When I went through the census, I looked for people born in Ireland.  There weren't that many.  And of those, I don't recognize any names.  I did however see lots of the names you are researching.  Lucky you!  My grandfather was even living at the same address as a Rimoner or Rimmer, one of your names.

Thanks,
Jan

I have my share of brick walls, for sure.  I was so interested to see your family came from Mayo, as my Brogan great great grandmother was born in Mayo and I have yet to track down the rest of the family or where in Mayo she originated.

Keep searching.  I've had some great results come just when I wanted to throw in the towel.  This site is a gold mine of information because the members are so generous with their expertise, and helpful hints.

Hello and welcome to our website and forum.

There are many reasons why you cannot find them a) they could have been
mis-transcribed   b) they could have been on holiday or c) sick in hospital or d)  in jail.

Did they have children...try looking for them.

Good luck,

Dotty
